For what it is worth... I noticed once that for some reason (and, as far as I know, for no reason at all) all my LibreOffice word processor documents on a VeraCrypt encrypted drive were suddenly locked and read-only. Rather than have to deal with thousands of locked documents, I found by trial and error that by copying (via Windows Explorer) all the files to a newly encrypted drive, that on the new drive there was no read-only issue.
Was hoping VeraCrypt power users might comment whether text passwords (that are not short in character length) are liable to be hacked in the near future if used without key files and/or extended characters, as cautioned by Richard.
I found a while back that VeraCrypt versions greater than 1.19 would not install on my Toshiba laptop running Win XP SP3 32-bit. From recall, in the forums it was suggested to someone that XP might need an updated distribution package (thawte_ Primary_Root_CA.crt). I tried this, but it did not help, so not being a power user, I stayed with 1.19. The laptop is no longer used as the screen died.
Maybe version 1.17 is a better fit ... https://sourceforge.net/p/veracrypt/discussion/technical/thread/ee530d6c/ PS. The next release of VeraCrypt (version 1.25) requires Windows 8 and above.
I had issues late 2020 trying to install the latest version of VeraCrypt (v1.24 update 7) on Windows XP Pro SP3. From memory, the certificate in the signature could not be verified and installation could not proceed. I found searching the forums a distribution package Mounir recommended for XP, but it did not work either. I had an older VeraCrypt installer, version 1.19.4.0, that I had used previously with XP, and it installed and works fine, including system encryption. Not sure if this is a fix...
Reading the VeraCrypt manual you will discover there is uncertainty regarding the security level that can be attained. Achieving what might be considered near-perfect security requires extensive knowledge, experience, specialized operations and round the clock physical security. As a result, regular folk make choices depending on individual circumstances, and in the overall scheme of things, the mouse movement issue is non-existent if 100% on the progress bar is achieved. The VC program (originally...
I remain unaware of an actual issue having been flagged in the VC forum concerning mouse movements beyond the end of the indicator, so the concerns you raised were not real-world but abstractions. Now I put the question to you in reverse (absent of malice). If you make encrypted volumes on behalf of others and are liable if something happens, then why are you providing this service when you don't know the ins and outs of encryption technology? The answer would be ... people accept help where they...
Anyone who knows enough of the internal processes of generating entropy would know enough to stop acting the goat.
