I began to wonder if the archive splitting function was broken. I had previously created a ZIP archive to see how big it was (~17Mb in this case) and since each part could be no larger than 10Mb, I entered "10m" into the split-to-volumes box and clicked OK. I got an "archive already exists message" and when I looked, there indeed was the 17Mb archive.
