I've had partial success with changes to the linker script. Revised to include " -b _DATA = 0x4000" and "-b _INITIALIZER = 0x0200" it puts the initialized variable values at 0x200 in rom, with ram referenced in the proper spot at 0x4000. At startup the variables are properly copied to ram and the program accesses them.

The idea came to me after seeing what was being done with SDCC on 8bitworkshop.com. My attempt uses some of their ideas, it's credited where cut and paste is obvious. I believe the author is Steven Hugg, who wrote a companion book. I want a minimalist command line setup in Windows for offline tinkering, basically a text editor, compiler and emulator.
