Currently, I put a 3mf file into a temp directory, then do the following (Linux) ls <tab> replace 'ls' with 'ls x'</tab> It would be nice to have 3mf recognized by 7-zip.

The ARexx functions were added to simplify porting from the Amiga, but there hasn't been a lot of testing to ensure full compatibility. I understand. ARexx was a wonderful thing for the Amiga. I particularly liked the ability to include an ARexx interface in a program, allowing you to do things in the program. CED (Cygnus Editor) was one such, and it allowed doing anything being edited to be done as if it were being done from the keyboard. Below is the equivalent program from your most recent example...

Don't know about ARexx, but generally at system level a sequential file cannot be opened for read and write simultaneously, and all writes are appends as long as the file is open. Reopening a sequential file for write resets its length to zero, unless the system provides an alternate method to open as append. Direct-access files are a whole 'nother story.
