Your document sample looks well laid out and informative. Some people are bound to get more out of a page layout document than a mindmap. And vice versa. I wonder, however, if 2 "forks" -- a reference manual and Freeplane's F1 documentation map -- might fragment the overall community documentation efforts and possibly confuse users. Dimitry, The fix in FP 1.7.10 works great. Much easier to use a connector line for linking words between nodes. Thanks. I'll update my video.

Not being active in the documentation effort, I don't know how much this is worth. I think the tutorial map should resemble a typical mindmap rather than try to mimic a typical, linear -- though foldable -- top-to-bottom document (which is what I assume the current layout is supposed to be). I suggest changing it by (1) resetting all node positions (View > reset node position) and (2) changing the edge style to smooth curve. fpay, Just stumbled on this. I have been using steps 1 and 3 for a while now, using shortcut keys. I'm very glad to know about step 2. Got my 3 shortcut keys ready for extensive service. I just started using the template chooser script. I like it but have a question. Is there an easy way to strip out the marker text "template:" from the copies made from it? I do it manually becuase I don't want the copies to show up in the template dialog. Thanks.

Steve, Thanks for the reply. I just realized I misrepresented something big. I said only a line could could link words (or positions). But the "simulate edge" is the only connector shape that won't anchor where you want it. I still think only the line can clearly and practically link words, at least for my purposes. But I'll go back -- after monitoring this thread for a few days -- and change that part of the video.

I like to connect 2 words between 2 nodes using connectors. Sometimes when I move one or both nodes, the word connection seems to be lost because the anchor point(s) get swapped (or whatever the tech term is). I just uploaded a video to youtube explaining my strategy for dealing with that. I made it unlisted for now, hoping some of you would check it out and give me counsel if I'm confused, which I am a lot. Then I'll either remake the video or make it public. Your last suggestion -- "^\w+\s\d+:\d+(-\d+)?" -- works in the Find toolbar, but not in Edit > Split > Split after regex. There I get an error : "look behind group does not have an obvious maximum length near index 23" and the code with a caret character under the first "d". Do you have any idea why?

Can anyone give me a tip on how to convert node core text , convert it to first letters , and put those initials into the details? I need punctuation to be included. example . node core = this is a test. I would like the details to = t i a t. I assume this is a job for regex. I am a rank beginner at both scripts and regex. I don't expect anyone to develop such a script (although I would not turn that down). I'm only looking for some pointers or tips. Thanks.

FYI, I just posted a video about using Freeplane to deconstruct text in order to find patterns that can be used in regular expression strings. This came out of my daily use of FP for Bible study notes. I thought it might be useful to a small group of users who have struggled with regex like I have. dakota, I agree it would be nice to have an additional edge style like the one you show in Freemind. It seems cleaner than the bezier curve edge style in Freeplane. In a new map, node formulas work as expected (eg, =3+2). But in an older map formulas do not work - I just get text '=3+2'. (I am using 1.7.4_pre02) This may be the proverbial stupid question. I tried searching the forum for the answer. Thanks.

I think my best bet at this time is to copy the note I want to keep in reference then past it into a new, temporary map, as a node core. The referenced info would then be a node rather than a note. (I will call the original/first map 'originMap' and the temporary map, with the pasted node, will be 'tempMap'). The copied note (from originMap) will be 'O' (for original) and the pasted text in tempMap will be 'P' (for 'pasted'). Then I will drag tempMap to make a map view on the right side of the FP...

Henk, Yes, you can view details of A while working on Z. But they must be adjacent or nearly so. If A and Z are on opposite sides of a large map, that would be impossible. For example, in a Bible study map, on the right side, I have branches for dissecting Bible passages. On the left side, I have nodes for Bible background (eg, topics, historical info). I may want to keep a historical background node's note visible while working on a specific Bible passage. But they would not be visible because of...

Dimitry, I had not considered that and I can't quite see how that would work. Wouldn't a presentation just let me look at node(s)? In a presentation, how could I view node A's note while working on node Z?

This has croped up a few times recently. I make a note for node A and want it to be visible when I select node Z. The equivalent in theWord Bible study software is a link button. Typically, a Bible view and a commentary view are linked together - so the commentary navigates with the Bible verse. But sometimes, because of the commentary's content, you want the commentary information to stay static even though the Bible verse keeps changing. This might be because you want to chase down some cross references...

If you first filter the current node and show descendants (on the filter toolbar) - then search-replace only looks within the filtered map.

Is there a way to filter on both the current node and the previously selected node - without having to manually select both nodes first? example use case: I am on node A. node A has a link to node Z. I click on the link and am now on node Z. I would like to be able to filter the 2 nodes. The nodes might be on opposite ends of the map, which may be very large. Thanks.

+1 My take : I would find it very convenient and consistent with other windows apps, if I the "back" and "forward" buttons had a drop-down history list I could choose from. It could be invoked either by hovering over the button, maintaining a left-click, or a right-click. That's the way most browsers work. If you make a feature request ticket, I'd vote for it (I think I recall that as an option).

I am in process of learning New Testament Greek. I am using Freeplane for simulating vocabulary flashcards. I think Freeplane mindmaps are great for this purpose. You can park on a Greek word and press spacebar to unfold/fold the child node, exposing the English. Of course, this technique could be used in any number of applications. I have a folder called "Freeplane 1 6" where my previous release was installed. I've been away from FP for a while and would like to install to a new folder : "Freeplane 1 7" but I cannot see an option for that in the installer. I automatically installs to "Freeplane 1 6". Any counsel?

When I try exporting a small map to msExcel 2003, either export map or export branches, I get an error (see image). I have been away from Freeplane for a while so I've probably missed some previous downloads. Could that be my problem?

The only way I know to do this, or something like this, is with the alt key (Windows) and the mouse wheel. First select a branch of the map. If you want the whole map, select the root node. You might have to collapse all nodes to start with the root and level 1 nodes. Hover the mouse over a non-node part of the map. Hold down alt key. Move mouse wheel toward you to unfold the branch. Away from you to collapse the branch. The attached files show the progression, using alt+mousewheel (toward you)....

I made a quick & dirty video about converting text with carriage returns + line feed to non broken text. Hopefully someone can suggest a script to do this better. Or, maybe someone knows how to do it better without scripting. This is kind of tedious so may not be workable for lots of text. The only equivalent behavior I've run into concerned keys that were physically sticking or key / key combinations that had gotten remapped. Is this behavior unique to Freeplane? I wouldn't think any program would remap Enter. But in Freeplane, you can see the key mappings from the menubar: Help > Key reference. Hopefully, someone will post a better answer soon.

I somehow had the idea that when my comments were integrated or rejected, my comment nodes and, ultimately, my copy of the topic would be deleted. But my copy of the topic is retained in icons_toIntegrate. I'm just trying to grasp the workflow. Do you see comment copies of the topic staying in the map when it reaches toIntegrate stage? I can see it working either way (retain/delete copy) but I just need to understand the process. Sorry for any confusion. I wasn't even sure where to log my query....

I thought I could go back and filter on them so I could review them, but I don't know how. I could not find a simple way either. Maybe one of the scripting masters can help you. I also like to keep track of important items so I created a style called important. Mine has an exclamation point icon and colored background. I assigned it to a keyboard shortcut. You can search for styles. If you take this route, you might want to put the style in the template that controls new maps.

Can't you do what you want by specifying the node border line width? Isn't that what you are asking for? I don't want to have to make a manual display change. I agree that is already available. I want the display to automatically change for whatever is currently selected. I want it to change automatically for whatever is selected. I'm thinking more like the behaviour when you have a filter turned on and click the "highlight all matching nodes" button on the filter toolbar. That gives a nice hightlight...

a toggle option to show page limits (borders?) in the normal program window. This way we could manually move any node, real time, to avoid them sitting betwen two different pages. What you guys think? Wouldn't this be helpfull to better print your work? It would be useful. Sometimes trying to get the right print options set and the map optimized for printing can take a lot of steps and a lot of time. But a real-time page break also might be like a map in auto-center mode - the map can jump around...

I would be happy if its possible to create several mindmaps in one document. For this multiple root nodes needed. Is it possible to implement? You can simulate multiple root nodes with floating nodes. On a blank part of the workspace -- hold down ctrl while you double click the mouse button. [edit] you can control the properties like with any stye : format > manage styles > edit styles. Edit the "floating node" style.

I think it is a very good idea but I don't know if many people will actually use it I have some maps I would dearly love to collaborate with others on. I also have some friends and colleagues I would dearly love to collaborate with -- but they either don't like mindmaps or they can't easily collaborate on Freeplane maps.
