I don't know whether qt5ct is 'needed', I'm just trying to resolve a problem with missing icons and using qt5ct was one of the advices I've seen, so I wanted to see what this app does. As there is no --help nor manpage, I've just tried to run it and got the error. This looks quite user unfriendly, as it gives no clue what the correct value should be and where to look for it. So I think that while the original problem in this bug now looks to me quite different - I came here just because of the same...

same error here - "The QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME environment variable is not set correctly" Gentoo with LXQt, trying to run it from terminal over xpra, not to make the setup straightforward :-)
