David and co - I was able to get the final effect on importing a STL into Gwyddion, by first using MeshLab. a) Open STL file in MeshLab. b) Orient the 2d surface of interest. c) Set POV to ortho (shift, mouse scroll wheel) d) Render (menu) / DepthMap (set zmin and zmax to stretch contrast (not yet quantified)) e) File (menu) / Save_SnapShot (set background to either white or black). f) Crop exported PNG to region of interest. The exported PNG can be directly opened/imported in to you Gwyddion, and...

David - My apologies for the delayed response. No, not for export, though I can think how that would be useful. Instead, I would like to open/import either (or all, if possible) STL, OBJ, or XYZ point clouds. Unfortunately, I am no longer a Linux person, so am unaware of good software for that platform. However, I do know that MeshLab works in Linux. If you can imagine something as simple as a coin, I would like to analyze surface profiles for objects in STL/OBJ/PointCloud scans with extent dimensions...

David - I would like to bring up this issue of hopefully getting either STL and/or OBJ file support. 3d scanners are getting down to the 10 micron resolution. I certainly would rather use Gwyddion for profile measurement, than the industrial options. Please consider this. thank you and kind regards, - Jim
