Try modifying the rule by clearing the "window name". That worked for me, not sure why but suspect that that is a bit dynamic and does not match immediately when the create window event triggers.

You might need to run "reapply rules" once after changing them to make things go in affect. But from now on I think that Thunderbird will always go straight to desktop 7?

I installed FF now, then I have middle mouse button enable window list. Click middle button twice on the FF window bar at the top left corner and you should get a menu were you can select add window rule. That will then give you prefilled rule window so just configure that as your liking and remember to add the rule.

Not sure if I test the same app, but found something called sticky notes in my default Win11 installation. And these small windows shift desktops with a vanilla virtuawin 4.5 installation.

Hi Steve and thanks for the reports. Problem here is that Win11 have never been tested by anyone before as far as I know, and I do not have access to any win11 setup myself so makes this really impossible to support. Clearly MS have made some changes that makes VirtuaWin incompatible then, and I honeslty thought that they would have made a worthy replacement for VirtuaWin by now, since it is over 25 years since I started to code on this thing.

Hi. Not sure why taks manager window refuse to hide actually. All data looks fine so is should really be working fine as any other normal window. Tried to configure a window rule now also but no luck :(

Sorry, was replying on my Linux box so could not check and then I forgot. But "windows rules" is the concept we use for assigning application windows to a certain desktop. Check the help on that topic and I think you can figure it out, even though it might seem a bit complex at first. /Johan

Ok, so I guess you would run an instance of VirtuaWin per VM then. And VirtuaWin should be able to persist your window layout, but I must admit that I'm really unsure how all this would play along in your rather special setup. On top of that, VirtuaWin is really not that great at handling multiple monitors in a good way I would say. Basically is will shift desktop on both your monitors at the same time, not as I have on my Linux box where the virtual desktop only handles the primary display.

Hi. Now I'm not sure which hotkey that is but could be Alt-Win-"left arrow". Soem other application probably have this assigned then, but open the hotkey config and try to remove or reconfigure the fith one in the list and see if that helps.

Sorry to hear about your situation, been in the IT business for over 22 years and never heard of such thing. Well, you cannot lock a screen but guess you can setup some freaky hotkeys to switch screen to make it very unlikely that they figure out how to switch. Still not sure this is the right tool, but can't you test a bit on your own PC to get a feel if it could work? PS. Not aware of any other "hiding tools", but haven't looked for it either. Hi Sue and same to you! It does not sound like a perfect fit to me. I guess if your issue is that they see an app window and close it, then running virtuawin here and hide the window by moving to another desk could help, as long as they do not figure that out of course. But feels easier to try and talk to the persons messing with you IMHO. Regards /Johan

Ok, back on Windows. Window rules for mail app - check automatically move to desk 1. - check Move windows immediately. - Then select on hidden window activation, chose ignore the event (or change globally for all according to your preference). Don't forget to click modify to apply your rule. Now mail app will always start on Desk 1 no matter what desktop you are on when starting it.

You mean you want it to auto move to desk 1 even if opened on desk 2? Think that would be possible, cannot test right now however since on Linux work computer.

Yea, middle button does not work on some windows, for example like these frameless ones that this app is constructed of. But strange then, no idea what could differ then. You can always paste a screenshot of your rules here so we can compare but really did not change any default so beats me. What you can do to just make sure your naming is the same, enable window logging (from settings), restart VW, then tail the logfile and open mail app and see what VW writes. In my case it was the two strings...

Yea, I would say unix based system have have very good "native support" from very long time back. What we as independent developers can do on Windows is basically just a hack, and try to make that hack as good as we can :(

Hi Caerandir. I honestly have no clue how they have implemented that, and really doubt that you can hook into that framework in any way. Let's hope Microsoft will perfect their solution in the future so the need for VirtuaWin will be eliminated. I find it amazing that there still is a lot of users after all these years and that they did not manage to build something proper yet. Regards /Johan

Hmm ok strange. Well, I never used this video application so cannot say anything about that, but I never heard of any other apps that misbehave for "always show". Looks like quite old video player, and do I need to compile it myself if I should give it a try?

I can see that Actualtools window manager solved this some way but closed source commercial product so no idea what they did. But they mention something about ignore deactivation setting for Excel. Hi. I have an exclusion rule for class ApplicationFrameWindow. I just cannot recall if I added this into the release or configured this myself at some time. But perhaps that could help unless you have it already. Then I must say these apps are a bit odd. Now when testing and opening for example Groove, sometimes it is anyways managed by VirtuaWin and sometimes ignored. Cannot figure out why :-/

Hi, could be this old issue from the FAQ mnaybe? "Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel Hotkey conflicts with hotkey assignment on install of virtualwin resulting in error message “Failed to assign hotkey”. Disabling the hotkey assigments from Intel Graphics Control Panel resolves the issue. Conflicting Hotkeys include ctl-alt-[right arrow] and ctl-alt-[left arrow]." Regards /Johan

Hi, and thanks for the reflection. When I started on VirtuaWin, I could never imagine that there would be such lack of support in Windows some 20 years later. And even more surprised that there still are a large user group for this little utility. Regarding the icons then, we did create a module for this. VWDesktopIcons This VirtuaWin module enables the user to select which desktop icons are visible and set their position on each VirtuaWin desktop. This module requires VirtuaWin version 3.0 or above....

Hi. I have slight different build version, other than that the same setup and works here. I'm running VW v4.5 beta however. Clicking on the ocon also works to bring up the same menu?

Hi Rod, and thanks for the feedback. Hard to say, there are always some applications that causes issues. One thing you can try is to create a rule for excel and use alternative switching technique for it. Some applications do better with moving to an offset instead of hiding them. Also, not that I think it would help for this, but the 4.5 beta version is handling win10 better in general. Regards /Johan

Hi. Cannot see why the keyboard would make any difference. But do you get any error when applying your hotkeys, or it simply does not work? Can you attach your non-working config files, or tell what key combo you are trying to setup?

Sorry for the documentation error, Program name = Process name. What if you middle click, and select "Add Window Rule"? Then the correct info should come pre-filled. Note: When using the Window Menu’s Add Window Rule feature the three name fields are set to the current window’s details, it is very unlikely that all three fields are required for the identification, particularly the Window Name.

Hi Steve. You can add a window rule now via the GUI. Check the "Window Rules Dialog" section in the help. Basically you middle click on your troublemaker application, add a rule and figure out bets settings for hiding it properly. /Johan

But I think you is looking for this message: / Message, set the sticky state of a window. wParam is the window handle * (HWND, 0 for foreground window) and lParam should be -1 for toggle, 0 for * unset and 1 for set sticky state. / #define VW_SETSTICKY (WM_USER + 26) So in that case, you need to get the window handle in some way programatically, or set the foreground window to "always show"...

Hi. I have low hopes on helping you here, mainly since I'm alone struggling to maintain VirtuaWin nowadays on very limited spare time and this module was not implemented by me. But let's see if we can take it forward a bit. What do you mean by for example "Major security issues with few modules and themes"? What is this coming from?

If you can find a way to stop windows from registering this combo then it should work. But an application cannot steal another registered combo.

Sorry for the delay, a bit occupied here. See the attached picture which setting I'm talking about. Change this to move window on your specific applicatrion rules (and don't forget to apply). One more thing to check: Open setup, goto modules, doubleclick on WinList module, locate your application and note down what is dosplayed on these lines.

Ok, so it is not a rule issue then. Seems to be a java application from what I can tell, could be that it does not respond well to hide messages. You can try changing the method for hiding this window to "Hide by move window".

Hmm ok, should actually move immediately after you hit apply (just tested here with another window). One control question, if you switch desktop then your application windows are hidden right? If the answer is no, then VirtuaWin does not even pick them up. But try just keeping the classname and see if it works then. And if ok, then try adding process name. Both process name and window name might not make any sense but depends on how the application is coded.

Ok, rules looks fine as far as I can tell (hard to know for sure without testing myself). Reapply rules can be done via the menu you find by clicking on the VW icon. Restart also applies the rules.
