I plan to release v1.8.6 soon, counting in weeks - not this week, maybe next week, though probably later. Besides several minor bug fixes, I found the occasion to rewrite an internal data structure for more efficiency. It was planned long ago, I just finally got around to it. At least for those who see this before upgrading, v1.8.6 will require deleting the prefs file and then adding your locations from scratch. As for your specific issue, I believe there is a preference option to disable the update check. That option does exist on MC. Perhaps you might try MC, although I have tested MC only up to macOS v10.15. If you try MC, I would appreciate hearing whether it works on your system. Hope this helps.
