I may have solved this myself. Suspecting that the problem is due to the need for a 32-bit version of Redo, I downloaded and tried the Nov 21, 2012 Redo Backup version 1.0.4 (which is probably what I used for the 2017 backup) and this seems to be working (restore is in process now). Later: Got "1 write error." Will try again. Still later: Retried with Redo in Safe Mode, and restoration of Win XP was successful.

I have a Win XP backup done in 2017 that I need to restore and I cannot get my existing Redo bootable USB containing some older version of Redo, or a fresh bootable USB containing the current version, to work. After seeing the welcome screen, things just freeze up when trying to do anything. Any thoughts welcome.

I am back for a marginally related question. When I used Boot Repair on your suggestion, I swear that I remember being given a choice of which of the attached drives to be the target of the repair (when there are multiples). Now, I do not see that option. What am I missing? thanks in advance. - James

You will be pleased to know that I just gave the boot-repair treatment to the formerly unbootable drive generated by REDO, and it now boots just fine! So, REDO and dd both worked fine. I should note that I found boot-repair on a bootable rescue disk, and I will never leave home without it. :-)
