    I had this exact same problem and this was a hit on Google, so the lack of replies wasn't helpful! In case it helps anyone else: in my case I was using a USB-SATA drive bay, and using a different one solved my problem; whether it was a faulty drive bay or just didn't support some operations that VC needed I don't know.
