I'd keep an open mind whether it may be a hardware problem. For example it's worth running memtest86 overnight on any PC you have problems with. Sometimes you find there are rare memory errors, even just one in 24 hours, then you can narrow it down, swapping individual sticks. Memtest is on the Mint CD you installed from. It's not within Linux, it's a diagnostic that can be run on Windows PCs as well. And it's on many distro CDs, also can download it from its home site.
