Just been testing this more carefully and my previous comment stands: pressing space immediately after the closing quote of an existing attribute value brings up the little drop-down of attribute names, but selecting one just inserts the name in the start-tag. Typing "=" supplies the equals and empty quotes, but if the attributes uses a token list (enumerated values) they are not listed. This seems a pity, as it means that xmlcopyeditor is not usable for creating XML documents.

Thank you...this is for a new installation, so perhaps webtrees is a better bet, I'm surprised I hadn't come across it while looking for suitable web-hosted family-tree display software. So far I have only used phpgedview on my laptop (as localhost) and only to display my gedcom file which is maintained in Gramps, so I am not tied to any one interface. From a quick look, webtrees suffers from a couple of the same display problems as phpgedview: the ancestor and descendant charts are all packed tight...

It's not where it says. The Download page at https://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php/Download_v4.2.x says to go to "PGV's Sourceforge help forum for download details" but that page says "Here's the download location: http://phpgedview.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/phpgedview/trunk/phpGedView/?view=tar" and that link gives a 404 The requested URL /viewvc/phpgedview/trunk/phpGedView/ was not found on this server.

Yes, it happily elides or corrects them. It wasn't clear what it needed though...tha ks very much for the pointers; I thought the error was syntactic rather than semantic. Gramps (my front-end) doesn't seem to provide named subfields of an address, though: I'll have to check with them how to enter that data (I think I had a post on that already, and no-one had a satisfactory answer -:)

I am importing a GEDCOM generated by Gramps and it’s throwing up the error: Performing GEDCOM validation... Invalid place encodings were detected. These errors should be fixed. Cleanup Places Example of invalid place from your GEDCOM: 1 OCCU 2 DATE 1909 2 PLAC Royal Navy HMS Tamar shore station Unfortunately it doesn't say why it's invalid, so I have no way of knowing what needs to be fixed. It is indeed used in an Occupation “event” but all we know if he worked there, not what his job was, so the...

Thank you Gerry...I had somehow managed to miss the "Upload Replacement" link. That was the functionality I wanted.

In view of the above, I have updated the entry on Free XML Software on the XML FAQ at http://xml.silmaril.ie/ (link on home page). P

I am indebted to Zane U. Ji for pointing out the trick with right-click with the cursor immediately before the TAGC of a start-tag, which I had not understood. While it is not as clear as a side-pane like Insert Element, it certainly completes a major part of the functionality which I was unaware of. A few points still need attention: if the cursor is within the element type name, typing space inserts a space in the name and does not remove it if you exit the dialog with Esc. A space in an element...
