Dear Igor: First of all, I love 7zip, thank you for creating and supporting this product. Thank you also for your quick response to my post. I didn't think to look at the CPU load, I will. I monitor the disk activity light, and frequently it will go out for long periods of time (5 or 6 seconds or more) telling me my process is CPU bound. So I am looking for ways to reduce the CPU usage so the process can run as fast as my disks will allow. Surpisingly, the disk actifity light will go out on .docx...
I'm using 7zip as a backup tool. A 32gig archive took 12 minutes, about 2.5 gig per minute. When I try to archive a complete volume 231gig, I'm at 50% after 3.5 hours, about a half gig per minute. I assumed performance would be linear, or something close to linear. Does performance degrade significantly as the archive becomes larger? My first 32gig did not contain lots of graphics or word docs, which appear to slow 7zip down. Is 7zip an appropraite backup tool? When I just copied the files to a USB...
