Asking about message log "reset adapter"

The reset is normal since in that case the driver will attempt to clear any packets that were still "in flight" when you turned off the ports. You can disable smart speed by either limiting the negotiation to a single speed, or build the driver with CFLAGS_EXTRA=-DIXGBE_NO_SMART_SPEED

Tx hangs are usually reported when the Tx queues are not cleared fast enough, or when the HW is hung (usually seen by the Tx descriptor head/tail not moving). In this case since the Tx hangs are not reported after disabling flow control it's likely that the interfaces are receiving XOFF packets, but usually a reset would at least bring the interface back into a working state, which does not seem to be the case for you. Some tests you can do to collect additional information at the time of the Tx...

Could you please attach the complete output of dfmesg (or at least from the time the driver was loaded)? Also the output of ethtool -S eth4 after the Tx hang was reported would be very helpful.

Could you attach the output of ethtool -S after the Tx hang is reported? Could you describe the setup that you have (any settings that differ from the default)? Also when providing logs make sure to include the version of the driver - ideally we will need the log from the moment the driver was loaded, not just the beginning of the Tx hang trace and if you can please add the logs as attachments to this bug (as oposed to copy/paste in the notes).
