    I have implmented your suggestion with success thanks. I assume the default data legth 7x188 is to do with transport streams? Anyhow I incrased this tenfold as it was too slow with the defult. No more trying to fudge it :). m4v files work perfectly now as expected. Thanks again.

    Thanks for the reply. The application is for users who do not know how to use the linux os mounting method. The os is pretty much transparrent to the application. The example looks intriguing thanks, i will see if i can get it two work with pysmb which has a function where you retrieve x bytes with y offset to a file object/buffer for retrieving file data.

    I am using pysmb module on python to retrieve a small chunk (aournd 10MB) of a video file over smb protocol to run mediainfo against. This works fine for mkv, avi, ts etc.... However for m4v/mp4 i only get back a general track. I did some testes and on and i needed to copy almost all of the file (aournd 80%) to get the video and audio tracks returned by mediainfo. This is not workable as i am working with large files > 3GB. I also tried copying the start and ends of the file but that did not work....
