I couldn't figure it out. I have to reconcile with Golly 2.8.1, packaged for Ubuntu 18.04.

Sorry, I was forgetful. This time, I ran make -f makefile-gtk. I downloaded golly-3.4-gtk-64bit.tar.gz but when I start the program, I get the following error ./golly: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have libpng16 on my machine. What can I do?

You can simply create a bash script which contains java -jar file.jar and set its permission executable.
