Was still running into some issues so I tried Michael's suggestion and it did allow me to back up a smaller (300mb) game. Other games were still freezing up even though the disc was still spinning. I tested another theory. Backing up a dual layer 6gb game (you know the one) and it dies at 20%. I decide to just leave it, walking away in frustration from my retro tv setup. This morning I come back downstairs and hard reset the Wii. To my surprise: there's the game, backed up perfectly. I have no idea...
Ran into this in 2019 when softmodding a black Wii (RVL-101, without the Gamecube Ports) that I saved from going into a landfill. I am using a Crucial BX500 120GB 3D NAND SATA I got from amazon for $22 that I had laying around. I don’t have a lot of discs so it should be enough for now. Also got a cheap $14 enclosure when I bought the drive. It’s working great for a while on both my systems so I figured I'd format it and try it after my USB stick wasn't working.
