I think the problem is the combination of a relative high PIM number and the auto-detection of the header key derivation function (PKCS-5). If the algorithm is manually entered, then the volume mounts, otherwise the mounting process hangs. So, besides the password, PIM, and the key files, a user should know this algorithm too.

It will be nice if this app will have an integrated error reporting feature, and it will also be nice to check, from time to time, what operation VC is doing, because on my system every time I try to open a VC container it gets stuck at mounting. I mean, OK, I understand that this operation takes a long time, but, FFS, it doesn't take forever. So, why isn't there a check of how long it took, then shut the darn thing down if took too long for this kind of operation. Since this doesn't happen, I have...
