Menu item highlighting broken in macOS Catalina

Dear Bernard, thank you for your quick reply. I had a closer look on this and have made two more observations: The behavior I describe happens only when (a) Appearance is set to Dark and (b) Highlight Color is set to Graphite in the General control panel of System Preferences.
