The cursor trails are the least of its problems, but in any case it seems a design error: the game saves a small portion of the background image and before painting the cursor at the new location it clears the old position using that portion. What can DxWnd do to not have it make a trail? Natively it doesnt make a trail
There's another problem we haven't talked about. As I said in the first post and the video, the sp01a.avi is supposed to be interrupted by other videos, but I can't see any trace of it in logs either
I made some progress with STOP button but nothing notably useful. Stop now creates extra windows, one with same video and another with stop video

Best as I can tell, MCIERR_ILLEGAL_FOR_AUTO_OPEN means it's trying to operate on an mci device from a different thread than the one that opened it. Debugging shows that that it is doing that. You are probably correct... The game seems to be targetting on multiple devIDs
