Deciding to go "online" with LAC can be intimidating.... there is a LOT to learn. But you will find our small community of users is VERY supportive. Everybody wants to help. Some of our players are very skilled and can easily carve up a beginner and serve him up as a "snack", but if you tell them you are a beginner in need of training, the vast majority are gracious and anxious to become your friend and tutor! After you have LAC running on your own computer you should play around with the offline...

Note: since mid-2023 you can also use our new "LacMenuManager" utility to set your CommunityHandle. The LacMenuManager offers a simple, text-based menu to automate editing the LacConfig.txt file, and then it launches LAC for you after making changes. You can learn more about the LacMenuManager utility from our forums here: https://sourceforge.net/p/linuxaircombat/discussion/lacmenulauncher/

You probably don't need to compile LAC because in Nov2021 we made it available in the well-known "AppImage" format which is executable on all leading desktop LINUX distros so long as you are using industry-standard "X86" hardware. As of 26Nov2021 we have confirmed success on all of the following LINUX distros: Ubuntu PcLinuxOs Fedora Debian Garuda EndeavorOS OpenSuse LINUX Mint PopOS SLAXX Arch Manjaro MX Linux You can find further details in our "LAC Distributed in universal, binary AppImage format"...

This is the right place to discuss the LacMenuLauncher and related topics, such as incompatibilities relating to LAC's built-in menus that plague our users on certain desktop LINUX platforms. An optional companion to Linux Air Combat, the "LacMenuLauncher" creates an alternative set of menus that can be manipulated with keyboard commands from a bash shell. Most people don't need it, but because it is compatible with all LINUX platforms, it can solve problems on LINUX platforms that are incompatible...

LAC version 9.76 (published in early Oct2024) has a bug that may make it necessary for you to edit your LacConfig.txt file as described above. If every attempt to fly one of LAC's online missions results in an error message reporting difficulty resolving the name of LAC's server, you are suffering from this bug. The bug is described (along with steps for recovery) here: https://sourceforge.net/p/linuxaircombat/discussion/lacbugtracking/thread/b33e5e2bd1/

  • bbosen bbosen posted a comment on discussion Mumble and LAC

Since LAC version 9.75, players in flight can now command mumble to switch to the OPPOSITION's TeamCast channel by pressing F12. In the context of this discussion where players are listening through mumble (on their desktop LINUX computer) but speaking through mumla (on their phone or tablet), pressing F12 will allow them to listen to the opposition team and they can speak to that opposition team through mumla by manually tuning mumla to that channel.

Players lacking a microphone that install Mumble anyway as described above can use a clever trick to fully participate in two-way communication including transmission of their own voice! LAC's authority to automate management of a copy of mumble installed on its host computer has long been available, but has been managed only though a cumbersome process that required editing of the user's hidden ~home/.LAC/LacConfig.txt file. LAC should be enhanced with a new command to toggle mumble management authority in response to a keyboard command available whenever the player is participating in a mission. By default, this should be mapped to the keyboard's "a" key. Thereafter, whenever the...

LAC has long had a provision, generally mapped to the "F10" function key and available whenever the player is participating in an online mission, that switches Mumble to the channel matching the player's current Realm, Mission, and Team. On certain LINUX distros (including at least a few old versions of Ubuntu and most releases for Steam Deck), LAC terminates with a "segmentation fault" after some period of normal flight. Usually this seems to happen during sustained violent maneuvers and especially during violent, accelerated stalls as the aircraft begins to shudder and enter into or exit from blackout. We've had consistent success overcoming this problem by editing the hidden ~home/.LAC/LacConfig.txt file and setting the "256"...

Recent versions of LAC (including the current beta-test version 9.75) fail to launch the user's browser in response to the "CHECK FOR MULTIMEDIA" buttons displayed in the aircraft selection menus. Consequently, LAC's very enjoyable, museum-like immersion into online YouTube aircraft documentaries is not available from the aircraft selection menus. As an example, here is one of the pages that should be (but is not) seen: https://askmisterwizard.com/2019/LinuxAirCombat/Planes/03.htm On the other hand,...

Future versions of LAC will fix this bug, but for the present we've found a workaround. Just go into your hidden ~home/.LAC/LacConfig.txt file with your favorite, simple text editor and search for "PreferredWebBrowser". You'll find some explanatory text explaining how to edit that value with the name of the browser you are using. We have found that if you install the free, well-known "firefox" web browser, you can edit the "PreferredWebBrowser" area as follows to get it to work: # # From time to...

LAC's authority to automate management of a copy of mumble installed on its host computer has long been available, but has been managed only though a cumbersome process that required editing of the user's hidden !home/.LAC/LacConfig.txt file. LAC should be enhanced with a new command to toggle mumble management authority in response to a keyboard command available whenever the player is participating in a mission. By default, this should be mapped to the keyboard's "a" key. Thereafter, whenever the...

This has been coded into new alpha test version 9.72. Players can now be demoted by transmitting a morse code message formatted like this: DDDDDDDD5 Where the eight "D" characters positively designate a "demote" command, and the single digit "5" demotes player number 5. (Use "DDDDDDDD0" to demote player 10.)

Once this facility is in place, the list of commands available to Promoted players should be enhanced with a new command, activated according to the pattern documented in FAQ #39, that will activate mumble management for all players participating in a mission. The command, sent by morse code to all players, could look like this: "AAAAAAAA" Where the "A" stands for LAC's "Authority" to "Automate" Mumble commands.

LAC has long had a little-used "Promotion" facility that allows "Promoted" players to take command of mumble for all players on their team. By default, this has been set "OFF" to prevent abuse. However, almost nobody is using it, and it could be very handy when training new users as soon as they install mumble because it can ensure that everybody is tuned to the same mumble channel. Accordingly, the default should be set to "ON" so everybody can use it more easily. To prevent abuse, a new "Demotion"...
