Just an observation, I can't verify at the moment if this
is really different from (OS/2) classic REXX. Tracing...
WHATEVER: procedure expose STEM.
...with an unused "STEM." I get symbol( 'STEM.' ) = 'LIT'
before the "procedure expose STEM.", but I get 'VAR'
immediately afterwards. I'd expect 'LIT', but this could
be wrong, maybe 'VAR' is a new "feature" in the standard
for this scenario.

This is one fundamental difference between Classic Rexx and Object Rexx. A stem variable is a holder for a stem object. The first time a stem variable is referenced, it will automatically be initialized with a backing stem object instance. Operations that cause the stem variable to get initialized include referencing a compound element and expose operations.
