"About as good as it gets... (Interface could be less Clunky)"

    Posted 2020-12-20

Pros: First off, there is an Error in this comparison description. vMix is not made or affiliated in any way with NewTek.

That being said vMix is the premiere new kid on the block that have raised the bar significantly for everyone else, including NewTek. (although NewTek is mainly a hardware solution with software)

vMix has excelled in newer, popular features and seems to be coming out with more features every six months or so.  I see how all the "Old-School" companies are bad-mouthing vMix as being "just a toy" because they are genuinely scared of losing their clientele to vMix... as they should be.

vMix has boldly added just about everything, but the kitchen sink, and they don't apologize for it. Everything it does, it does well, or at least pretty darned well.

Their integration of dedicated Call-In features along with NDI & SRT support is notably featured and it all comes at an affordable price.

Cons: It's hard to post cons as I really really had to think hard to come up with a couple aspects that I honestly think they might be taken as trite points.

vMix's User Interface feels a little clunky making the learning curve just a bit harder than it has to be. The program writers who designed this platform are obviously not seasoned Professional Content Producers (as seen in their own sales and weekly promotional pieces).

This leaves us with a kind of "Computer-Geeky made" software that does not always fit in the "traditional" production environment that we're comfortably used to.
That's not to say that there aren't work-a-rounds and/or newer ways to skin a cat.

Also, there are a few features that any professional would think should have been obvious and included, that for the life of me, I can't understand that after many many feature requests, the nice fella's down under just don't seem to implement or even entertain the thought of adding certain features.
One, for example would be some sort of a waiting "Green" room for the Call-In folks. Whoever comes up with this protocol first IMHO is going to instantly garner the whole market... like overnight.

Overall: I definitely would recommend anyone wanting to move from a hardware solution, to that of a software one to give vMix a try. Especially with their 60-day Free Trial and that's not a dumbed-down trial version, but rather the whole top end version that includes up to eight incoming callers.
