About Proton Mail

Proton Mail is incorporated in Switzerland and all our servers are located in Switzerland. This means all user data is protected by strict Swiss privacy laws. All emails are secured automatically with end-to-end encryption. This means even we cannot decrypt and read your emails. As a result, your encrypted emails cannot be shared with third parties. No personal information is required to create your secure email account. By default, we do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account. Your privacy comes first. We believe email privacy should be available to all. That's why our code is open source and basic Proton Mail accounts are always free. You can support the project by donating or upgrading to a paid account. Proton Mail can be used on any device without software install. Proton Mail Business allows you to keep your business email address. Send and receive encrypted emails both inside and outside of your organisation.

    "Excellent privacy oriented emails"

    Posted 2023-05-15

    Pros: - Easy to use,
    - Open source,
    - Possible to use with a custom domain (requires a premium subscription),
    - Privacy orientated (something truly rare these days!)

Cons: - Could allow for more domains in the premium non-business plans
    - The IOS app is somewhat bug-prone and could use more polish and if possible integrate more with the system.
    - No MacOS app

Overall: ProtonMail is a great privacy orientated email provider, the pricing can leave a bit to be desired depending on your use-case but otherwise I would strongly recommend it.

"The 1st provider you hear when you want a privacy-respecting e-mail"

    Posted 2022-03-02

Pros: The web client is great for all my needs, and ProtonMail is a privacy-respecting e-mail provider, based on Switzerland.

Cons: No IMAP support on the free plan, and you also need to use an app for that to happen.
Low storage - only 500 mb.
My grandparents have used ProtonMail for their e-mails (I created so they can use some government services), and some of those services would not recognize.

Overall: Overall, ProtonMail is a solid choice for a privacy-respecting e-mail provider, there are some issues, like services not recognizing your ProtonMail address, but it's only minor.

    "Great privacy-centric emails"

    Posted 2021-08-15

Pros: The # draw is that this is a secure, privacy-focused email alternative. It also has a very sleek interface.

Cons: Understandably, it does not offer a large amount of storage, only 500MB, so no hoarding like you would with gmail.

Overall: This is one of the best privacy centric email services around. If more of them nailed the user interface like this one does, Gmail should be scared.

    "Got away from gmail!"

    Posted 2021-02-28

Pros: Can encrypt if you want, or not. All settings are available and it is easy to set up everything. Have a free version that I am currently using and it is not restricted in any way. Allows for two-factor authorization.

Cons: Just couldn't find any cons as of yet. Have used the program for about 3 months.

Overall: I really like using Proton mail. The best part is that I am no longer tied to Google mail in any way and have removed all four of the accounts that I had there. Proton mail has given me the security of knowing that I have a level of privacy.

    "More private mail"

    Posted 2020-11-19

Pros: ProtonMail offers encrypted emails, so it's a good option for those looking for a more private, secure email service compared to the bigger ones out there like Gmail and Outlook. It's got fairly priced options, and the free version isn't too bad either.

Cons: Much like Tutanota, however, you can't use this as your only email account because a lot of services won't recognize it as a "valid" email service even though it very obviously is.

Overall: I keep going back and forth between this and Tutanota. For the time being, I prefer Tutanota though I think ProtonMail is the more polished of the two. Both are good services for encrypted mail. I'd give them both and try and see which one you prefer.

    "Feel Safe"

    Posted 2020-10-17

Pros: I love that my emails are end to end encrypted. I found out that Gmail reads my emails and I quickly signed up for the free version.

Cons: People look at me weird when I give them my email address now.

Overall: Overall the free version is great unless you are going to be sending a ton of emails. It works for me and I feel safe using it.
