Users that want an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage solution

About Proton Drive

Proton Drive early access provides end-to-end encrypted cloud storage, suitable for securing sensitive documents with the same kind of encryption we use to secure emails in Proton Mail and events in Proton Calendar. We continue to build more features for Proton Drive, but the early access version is ideal for some use cases:

- Securely backing up sensitive files, such as medical records, financial documents, copies of identity documents
- Storing files with end-to-end encryption in the cloud, so you can access them from any device

With most cloud storage services, such as Google Drive, companies can monitor and scan your files and profit off your data. They could also potentially hand over your data to third parties. With Proton Drive, you encrypt your data on your own device before uploading it to our secure servers, meaning we do not have the ability to access your files. We never spy on your data, and make zero money through ads.

    "New to Proton"

    Edited 2022-09-02

Pros: The web page designs are fresh, uncluttered and easy to read. I currently use MEGA and I'm considering paying Proton for full-service VPN, e-mail and Drive combined. The price for 500 GB of combined storage is around $7 / month prepaid on a 2-year basis. I think that's very reasonable if you're willing to commit.

I'm not a sharer but a daily user of cloud storage and Proton Drive's features suit me very well.

Cons: Having to pay for 2 years in advance presumes a willingness to commit. I understand it's a business model but MEGA provides 400 GB (cloud storage only) for about the same ($6) month-to-month.

Overall: I've been using their [paid] VPN and it seems solid. As I said above, their e-mail and their cloud storage is easy to use and it's nice to have the three services integrated into one provider.

"File Sharing Option: Excellent, but quirky"

    Edited 2022-05-31

Pros: The 'share' link leads recipients to a page with two options: Download Folder and Get your own Proton Drive.

The shared folder is linked to the second option, not the first. But not reliably, only for those already logged in to the Proton service. For anyone else, the first option must be used, and then many more steps to access the actual file(s).

Cons: The link sharing is quite non-intuitive. Download Folder is what somebody new to the service will do, when sent a link to a shared folder. But to get to the actual shared files, you have to jump through hoops (download a zipped file, unzip it).

Overall: Using the Drive is great for personal use, not for Sharing, but the latter is one of the critical services associated with online storage.
