About

Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is Microsoft’s open-source AI code editor designed to make coding faster, smarter, and more collaborative. It supports thousands of extensions and nearly every programming language, offering developers a lightweight yet powerful environment for writing, testing, and debugging code. With AI-powered features like GitHub Copilot, Next Edit Suggestions, and Agent Mode, VS Code helps you code with precision, automate complex tasks, and streamline development workflows. It integrates seamlessly with cloud services, remote repositories, and tools like Git, Docker, and Azure. The editor is fully customizable, allowing you to personalize your layout, color themes, and keyboard shortcuts. Whether coding locally or in the browser, VS Code delivers a complete development experience for individuals and teams alike.

About

X# is an open-source development language for .NET, based on the xBase language. It comes in different flavors, such as Core, Visual Objects, Vulcan.NET, xBase++, Harbour, Foxpro, and more. X# has been built on top of Roslyn, the open-source architecture behind the current Microsoft C# and Microsoft Visual Basic compilers. We have added a new options page (tools/options/text editor/X#) where you can control which suggestions the editor will suggest in the "general" code completion list. Code completion after a colon or dot will show namespaces, types, members, etc. And code completion after AS or IS will show types and namespaces. Several preprocessor fixes to make the preprocessor more compatible with FoxPro and Xbase++. We have also added the #if and #stdout commands. We added several smaller fixes in the RDD system to improve the compatibility with Visual Objects, XBase++ and FoxPro.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I have used Visual Studio Code mainly for automation scripting and day to day code updates and I like that it is lightweight, easy to navigate, and supports useful extensions. It makes it convenient to manage scripts, terminal commands and quick debugging in one place
  • Lightweight and very fast Excellent extensions for HTML, CSS, JSON, schema, Markdown Makes debugging tracking scripts much easier Powerful search across folders and files Free and works smoothly even on low systems
  • Linux, macOS, and Windows are among the operating systems that Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is compatible with. Its cross-platform compatibility makes it a flexible option for developers working in various contexts.
  • 1. It has an excellent set of tools for debugging and testing the code. 2. It can be customized heavily from the settings or from the configuration files. 3. Furthermore, it has a lot of extensions available on the extension store to increase the features and functionality of the code editor. 4. It supports all the major programming languages and frameworks. 5. It is extremely light on the system.
  • Best free IDE that i have used so far. It is very light weight in terms of memory utilisation and works smooth on my Mac Book PRO. I really like the window splitting feature and renaming my terminal tabs. I can run my different environments in different named tabs.

Cons

  • One issue I have seen is that it can slow down a bit when too many extensions are installed or when the project becomes large
  • Slight learning curve if you’ve never seen code editors Too many extensions can become confusing Not beginner-friendly on day one without YouTube help
  • VS Code could be thought to be less efficient for really big projects when compared to more complex IDEs. Nevertheless, the size and complexity of any project will determine this.
  • It does not have dedicated build tools available on the options and to use that the user has to use command in the terminal.
  • Although the features are great, one feature that i really miss out on this IDE is the use of GIT. E.g. if it does not support a GUI to resolve merge conflicts. It is handy for updating the repo but not that flexible for resolving conflicts.
