About

Upstream (upstream.so) is cloud streaming software that does four things in one plan: 24/7 live streams from prerecorded videos with your computer off, scheduled prerecorded streams that go live on their own, live shows with up to 10 people on stage in a browser studio, and multistreaming to 30+ platforms, up to 10 at once. Upload videos and music once, loop video and audio playlists separately in order or shuffled, and change them while the stream stays live. One YouTube broadcast on Upstream has run without a restart since July 27, 2024. Upstream is on YouTube's verified encoder list. The free plan gives 24 streaming hours every month at 1080p with 100 GB of storage, no card and no watermark. Paid plans start at $30 a month for one stream running 24/7 ($24 billed yearly), as low as $16 a stream with 4 or more billed yearly, with 60 fps and 4K available. Upstream is made by Zukunft d.o.o. in Zagreb, Croatia, founded 2023.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • First off, there is an Error in this comparison description. vMix is not made or affiliated in any way with NewTek. That being said vMix is the premiere new kid on the block that have raised the bar significantly for everyone else, including NewTek. (although NewTek is mainly a hardware solution with software) vMix has excelled in newer, popular features and seems to be coming out with more features every six months or so. I see how all the "Old-School" companies are bad-mouthing vMix as being "just a toy" because they are genuinely scared of losing their clientele to vMix... as they should be. vMix has boldly added just about everything, but the kitchen sink, and they don't apologize for it. Everything it does, it does well, or at least pretty darned well. Their integration of dedicated Call-In features along with NDI & SRT support is notably featured and it all comes at an affordable price.

Cons

  • It's hard to post cons as I really really had to think hard to come up with a couple aspects that I honestly think they might be taken as trite points. vMix's User Interface feels a little clunky making the learning curve just a bit harder than it has to be. The program writers who designed this platform are obviously not seasoned Professional Content Producers (as seen in their own sales and weekly promotional pieces). This leaves us with a kind of "Computer-Geeky made" software that does not always fit in the "traditional" production environment that we're comfortably used to. That's not to say that there aren't work-a-rounds and/or newer ways to skin a cat. Also, there are a few features that any professional would think should have been obvious and included, that for the life of me, I can't understand that after many many feature requests, the nice fella's down under just don't seem to implement or even entertain the thought of adding certain features. One, for example would be some sort of a waiting "Green" room for the Call-In folks. Whoever comes up with this protocol first IMHO is going to instantly garner the whole market... like overnight.
