About

Serial Port Monitor is a professional software application that allows reading and recording serial data going through your computer’s serial ports. The program is a big help for those who develop and debug software and hardware solutions that use COM ports for serial data transfer. RS232 Port Monitor comes with a slew of powerful features, including advanced filtering and search options, built-in terminal, convenient data visualizers, the ability to record serial communication data to a file, and more. The software has a streamlined and user-friendly interface and doesn’t require any programming skills. There are Professional and Company editions of Serial Port Monitor. When using the software in terminal mode, you can emulate sending some special commands to the monitored port as though they were sent from a monitored application. This way you get the ability to check the reaction of the COM port and device connected to it.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Excellent visibility into serial port communications and data traffic. Very useful for debugging Arduino, embedded systems, and USB-to-serial devices. Helps quickly identify baud rate, data formatting, and communication issues.
  • Serial Port Monitor is a highly convenient and effective tool that delivers exactly what it promises. It’s easy to use, even for those without deep programming knowledge, yet powerful enough for professional workflows. The ability to read, record, and analyze serial data in real time is extremely valuable, especially for debugging and development tasks involving COM ports. The built-in terminal and data visualization features stand out, making it simple to interpret communication streams without needing additional tools. Advanced filtering and search options also save a lot of time when working with large volumes of data. Overall, it offers great value for money, particularly considering the breadth of features included.
  • Although I don't have much experience with similar software, I was impressed by Serial Port Monitor right after launching it for the first time. I found the controls intuitive and was immediately able to monitor communication between the computer and BMS.
  • Top software, very easy to use and offers tons of possibilities. I stumbled upon this program by chance and I'm totally thrilled.
  • Effective debugging tool for serial communication with Arduino boards, GPS modules, USB-to-serial adapters, and other DIY hardware. Real-time data monitoring helps spot issues like mismatched baud rates, protocol errors, and unexpected device behavior. Useful for firmware testing, allowing verification of expected data during uploads and troubleshooting firmware/configuration issues. Logging functionality lets you capture serial traffic for later review, making it easier to analyze long test sessions and identify patterns. Educational value, helping you better understand serial protocols, message structures, timing, and device handshakes through hands-on observation. Great for learning and experimenting, including reverse-engineering communication on vintage or hobby devices.

Cons

  • No significant issues encountered during my use. The interface feels somewhat dated, but functionality remains excellent.
  • While the functionality is strong, the design and user interface could benefit from modernization. Compared to current software standards, some elements feel slightly outdated. Improving the visual appeal and user experience would make the tool even more attractive, especially for new users who expect more polished interfaces today.
  • I haven't found any downsides to Serial Port Monitor. Maybe the price, but that's relative, because the pros clearly outweigh the cons.
  • Unfortunately, the software is a bit expensive, but I'm considering spending the money on it anyway.
  • Focused use case — primarily valuable for those working with serial devices and microcontrollers, not general-purpose debugging.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • ZOC Terminal proved to be a flexible and configurable replacement for PowerTerm, especially for environments requiring legacy 7-bit Hebrew support. The cooperation with Markus Schmidt, Founder and CEO of EmTec, was truly remarkable. He worked closely with us to enhance ZOC with built-in VT420 Hebrew support and features tailored specifically to our needs, including perfect Hebrew/English language-switch synchronization with Windows.
  • Flexible software, excellent price point, developer is excellent and responsive. We were currently running Attachmate which we've been unable to install on the most recent version of Windows 11 and therefore we were scrambling for some type of alternative. ZOC was the perfect fit. It did what we wanted and more.
  • For users who are connected to many different machines per day, ZOC gets you online FAST with its Host Directory where usernames, passwords, SSH keys, and logging to disk will save you incredible amounts of time. ZOC can record keystrokes and commands and record a script a script on-the-fly, without having to log out and log back in again to run it. The recorded script can immediately be played back for repetitive actions on servers, routers, etc. or can be edited and enhanced later as needed. Multi function F1 - F12 hotkeys can be mapped to a simple command or can launch your own sophisticated ZOC scripts on one Tab, or multiple Tabs if multiple machines simultaneously need the same task performed. ZOC's scripting language is POWERFUL yet easy to learn. The more you use a terminal program, the more you need ZOC!
  • Being able to run the same TN3270 emulator on MacOS and Windows is a huge plus! If you have used other emulators in the past, conversion to ZOC is quite simple. ZOC offers a large number of options that allow you to configure and customize the software to meet your needs. EmTec provides incredible and responsive software support. Being a new user of ZOC, I had questions, feedback and a few enhancement requests. The support team has been very easy to work with.
  • Layout. Range of connectivity options. Customisation options. One time perpetual licence model. Support included.

Cons

  • Adapting ZOC Terminal to fully match our long-standing PowerTerm behavior required some configuration effort. While this took time, the support provided by EmTec helped us resolve the issues gradually and effectively.
  • We have none at this point, but if that might change as we've only been using it for approx 3-6 months.
  • ZOC is so good I can not think of any negative aspects. it's GREAT.
  • My con for this product is simply that I did not know that it existed. Since I work on MacOs and Windows environments, using the same TN3270 emulator would have been great!
  • None found yet, and I have used it for a while now.
