About

Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop. Scrivener is the go-to app for writers of all kinds, used every day by best-selling novelists, screenwriters, non-fiction writers, students, academics, lawyers, journalists, translators and more. Scrivener won't tell you how to write—it simply provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing. Tailor-made for long writing projects, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don't know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea. Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: hammer out every last detail before typing a word, or carve out a draft and restructure later. Or mix your methods and do a bit of both.

About

Scyn is a visual plot-mapping tool for novelists. The surface is a causal graph, not a timeline grid. Each scene is a node, and when one event produces another you draw a directional link from the first to the second. A node carries a title, an optional description, a chapter or act tag, and a colour. Links can carry a short label. Filters narrow the map by act, chapter, or colour. Story Mode reads the same map back in chapter order. Scyn is web only. There is no desktop or mobile app and no manuscript editor. It is a plot logic layer, not a writing suite, so it sits alongside Scrivener, Dabble, or a word processor rather than replacing them. The free plan needs no card and has no time limit: one novel, 100 scenes, 200 links, 5 restorable versions, PNG export. Pro is $4.99/month or $49/year and adds unlimited projects, 1,000 scenes and 2,000 links per map, Story Mode, Cast and Places, unlisted sharing with 5 collaborators, 30 versions, PDF and DOCX export.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • The low one-time fee is a great model in a world where everything is subscription. The many panels and options the software offers allows for sorting and organization of incredibly deep world and plot management easily.
  • You can organize your thoughts for story writing and the text processor is alright. There's also the infamous corkboard view that so many people love, though I'm personally meh about. Still, it gives you some variety in how you view things, and I'm never against that even if I personally don't like how it looks.
  • Great interface Writing, Editing and lots of other uses Comparison tool Distraction free writing Export to multiple formats Single license for multiple installs

Cons

  • Very tricky interface to get used to. It is still a text editor at heart with robust features but not much more.
  • This is probably one of the most overrated writing software out there. All "writer" focused software is overrated, and typically overpriced. What Scrivener can do, you can do absolutely for free much easier in Evernote or any other program like that. I've actually found Notepad++ to be much better at organizing writing and notes than all of the more polished, newer programs out there. It rarely gets support, especially for the PC users. Mac is clearly prioritized. I've also known people, thanks to how they verify your license is active (which apparently needs to be done every time you use it even though it's a one time purchase!) lose access because they changed servers, resulting in them having to rebuy the exact same product again. Updates are few and far between, and discounts are promised on products that don't exist yet.
  • No updates for Windows version. No feature for collaboration.
