About

Bolt is an open-source orchestration and automation tool from Puppet that helps IT teams automate infrastructure management and operational workflows without requiring agent software on remote systems. The platform enables users to perform tasks such as patching servers, deploying applications, troubleshooting systems, restarting services, and executing remote commands across infrastructure environments using SSH or WinRM connections. Bolt supports workflow orchestration through reusable tasks and plans that allow teams to automate complex operational processes and one-time infrastructure changes efficiently. The tool can be installed on a local workstation and connects directly to remote targets, making it lightweight and flexible for infrastructure automation and remote administration. Bolt integrates with Puppet modules and related Puppet products.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Open Source Lightweight & easy to deploy Supports async messaging Good management interface Cloud Ready solution Lots of plugin support

Cons

  • Although it has great official tutorial, i think it may be a bit daunting for less experienced developers. There can be video lectures explaining the concept of AMQP and RabbitMQ. That's just nitpicking to find a con, it works great as a message broker.
