About

Paint.NET is image and photo editing software for PCs that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is now maintained and developed by Rick Brewster. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe® Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP. Paint.NET delivers a cost-effective alternative to pricey commercial software.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I have used this tool for over 10 years. While graphic design is not my area, I do some minor graphical work and editing for my projects and also utilize this tool to review in greater detail the work of my developers who focus on graphic assets. The software represents a great middle ground between simple editors such as MS Paint and paid for expensive tools like Adobe Photoshop. Compared to Adobe Photoshop two features I love is the ability to natively load .DDS files which is not natively supported in Photoshop. DDS files are heavily utilized in my projects, so this is a major benefit. The other is that Paint.Net while having less features, is much easier to use and has a much easier to learn user interface than Adobe Photoshop.

Cons

  • The software lacks some of the features of other more advanced image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop. That said, this is a freeware tool, and given Photoshop is not this is more than understandable.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • The touch controls (three-finger tap to undo, etc.) are very intuitive and once you've got the hang of them, they become second nature. I fly through simple projects because the user interface makes so much sense and is organized so well.

Cons

  • The learning curve is steep. Learning on my own was so overwhelming that I sought out courses on YouTube and Skillshare, which discouraged me a bit.
