About

API is first-class, discoverable, versioned, documented. MessagePack structured communication enables extensions in any language. Remote plugins run as co-processes, safely and asynchronously. GUIs, IDEs, web browsers can, embed Neovim as an editor or script host. Works the same everywhere, one build-type, one command. Modern terminal features such as cursor styling, focus events, bracketed paste. Built-in terminal emulator and strong defaults. Fully compatible with Vim's editing model and Vimscript v1. Start with :help nvim-from-vim if you already use Vim. The current stable release version is 0.5 (RSS). See the roadmap for progress and plans. With 30% less source-code than Vim, the vision of Neovim is to enable new applications without compromising Vim's traditional roles. Lua is built-in, but Vimscript is supported with the most advanced Vimscript engine in the world (featuring an AST-producing parser).

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It's free and open-source, extremely fast start-up times, uses very little memory, and surprisingly customizable (I barely did any myself though; I wanted to keep it light). I find it useful for swiftly taking notes at a moment's notice, but I have also used it to quickly peek through config files, source code, or even certain text documents--they all just work. As a user who swaps between Windows and Linux, it being cross-platform is such a huge plus for me, and is the leading reason why I use it over Notepad++. As much as I like tinkering with software and hardware alike, I also don't want to find out that certain features I use regularly on one OS's notepad don't exist on other OS's notepads, even some third-party ones. It's just some peace of mind.

Cons

  • It lags for ~1 sec when it wraps text for the first time since the app was opened. Even after using this app for over a year, I still find the logo hard to identify as a text editor of any kind. I still have to tell people who borrow my laptop that my notepad app is this, even when it's pinned to the taskbar and start menu.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I used it to develop Java and c++. I loved the speed and flexibility and the fact that no mouse is needed and you can have a very fast and efficient workflow using the keyboard with easy to remember neumonic s (like SF to search files) rather than holding down lots of different modifiers that are hard to remember. The editor is the focus and temporary popups are used for searching for things, call hierarchy, errors etc so you aren't rearranging splitter positions all the time. The errors were shown instantly as I typed and I could even launch my application when while it had compile errors and my refactoring was not finished. Much better than the workflow in intellij for example.

Cons

  • There is some investment time needed to learn it initially but the power and flexibility it gives you is worth it in the end.
