Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • For my needs the free version was more than sufficient to make available public files lost when designer passed away. Was working to consolidate the files and information into one PDF via LibreOffice in organized well indexed cross referenced document to allow those wanting to build this highly sensitive seismometer to do so rather than fish about the files of odd names or hidden in zip files. I am a retired software engineer that role included managing source control systems and project within including ensuring builds worked. Hence I have worked with many vendor solutions as well as create in house source control systems over many years. I have had privilege to use some excellent SCM years ago that is not even close to "modern" SCM currently and in past years.
  • The UI and baseline features are a great asset to this, I generally prefer the GitLab UI, especially the online UI as compared to Github. GitLab also offered when I last configured it more free options than Github, especially in regard to branch management. That said the biggest advantage this used to have as compared to Github was that Gitlab allowed private development for free while Github did not, that said Github changed this in prior years so both are solid choices.
  • - GitLab provides a user-friendly user interface to version control the and collaborate with teams on projects. - Admin can assign various roles to the developer, providing him limited control over the code base. - Code comparison user interface is intuitive and helps a lot in reviewing the code before merging. - It is free to use for personal use.
  • With GitLab, it is pretty easy to create repositories and manage the permissions. Different roles like developers and owner can be assigned to a repository. Various tasks like creating branches, pushing code, cloning and merging can be done easily. The code can be reviewed before merging and the review interface is detailed and display all the important key points. It is available for free for individuals. The user interface is modern and intuitive.
  • 1. GitLab has the best user interface among every other version control tools. 2. Creating a repository and managing it is a pretty easy task with GitLab. 3. The learning curve is relatively lower than other alternatives. 4. It has good integration with third-party software programs like Jira and VS Code.

Cons

  • Impossible to accomplish most basic of basic tasks like create folder, upload files. Impossible to delete account. Impossible to use help as often goes to page not found. Annoying have to open ticket to request account delete. Very annoying as some point cloudflare intercepts saying need to confirm human
  • My main issue with GitLab when trying to use it on freeware projects was that it is more technically challenging to setup than Github. The need to manually get SSH keys can be challenging for those less skilled with technical capabilities. For example, setting up other similar tools such as Github on a project that has various contributors both those with coding abilities as well as less technical roles such as writers or graphic developers, there is the potential for misunderstanding and difficulties in setup.
  • - Merge conflicts can be a bit tricky to resolve sometimes because of the instruction.
  • The system becomes noticeably slower when scaling the projects, hence, in my experience, I didn't find it the best version control platform for scalable projects.
  • 1. There isn't anything to dislike about the tool, it is easy to use, intuitive and has a really good support.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • The feature that stands out for me is the assignment of tasks and subtasks, as this has allowed me to have a better record and tracking of the processes that must be completed in a project, resulting in having total control and minimizing time losses in case something fails. Jira's customization is unmatched, organizing work with this platform is incredible as it gives total control to customization and even more so when it has different templates that allow streamlining the planning of a project. It has AI integrated into certain tools on this platform, this has helped me generate much more efficient reports, it also integrates with different popular platforms in relation to communication and teamwork.
  • Jira is a brilliant and exceptional tool that provides great features that makes project management easier. I have been using Jira for more than 8 years and it has been of great help to me and my organization. I like the fact that it is so easy to tailor the project management view on Jira to your organization's needs.
  • There are certain capabilities of this software which i like a lot about this software like: 1. Powerful search & filtering capabilities 2. Extensive integrations with Atlassian & third party tools 3. Granular permissions for different team roles 4. Broad ecosystem of Add-ons & apps.
  • Jira provides the full solution with robust and flexible features that allow you to fully manage & automate the workflow of simple, as well as complex projects. It also has rich reporting and analytics.
  • I have been using JIRA for 10+ years. I love it but also hate it at the same time. However the love for it far surpasses the unhappiness! Atlassian has been making the product better the last 2 years and Cloud is by far the best they have ever done. The platform is powerful and the ease of use is improving in each release. At this point there is literally no need to use anything else.

Cons

  • Extensive and deep features that require some learning time to be able to use this tool properly. I would like them to simplify the learning process so that it is easier to adapt. In addition, its interface became more complex after applying certain updates, which radically changed how the interface was structured. Although this platform is complex to use, there are certain features that require a bit of tools, especially in the communication part. I feel that my work team has a hard time adapting to maintaining communication within this platform. It seems that Jira does not adapt to the new communication methods that currently exist.
  • To be sincere, there is nothing i dislike about Jira as it meets all my expectations.
  • The clunky interface always makes people a little confused about the features of capabilities of Jira Software, simplifying the same could benefit the users a lot.
  • Due to the extensive features Jira has, the learning curve is quite steep and it is suggested that you invest in training.
  • For junior or small teams JIRA is too much but for any team doing actual product development work this is the tool.
