This is the official website of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). GIMP is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows and more operating systems. It is free software, you can change its source code and distribute your changes. Whether you are a graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, or scientist, GIMP provides you with sophisticated tools to get your job done. You can further enhance your productivity with GIMP thanks to many customization options and 3rd party plugins. GIMP provides the tools needed for high quality image manipulation. From retouching to restoring to creative composites, the only limit is your imagination. GIMP is used for producing icons, graphical design elements, and art for user interface components and mockups. GIMP is a high quality framework for scripted image manipulation, with multi-language support such as C, C++, Perl, Python, Scheme, and more!

About

Whether you are an illustrator, designer, web designer or just someone who needs to create some vector imagery, Inkscape is for you! The design process may begin by doodles on a napkin, a sketched mindmap, a photo of a memorable object, or a mockup in software which really wouldn't work to complete the project. Inkscape can take you from this stage to a final, professional-grade design format which is ready for publication on the web or in physical form. Inkscape is free! By this, we mean it is free of cost, free to use and distribute, and open to peek into the source code.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • GIMP is a freeware image editing program. The main benefit of GIMP for myself was it was the only freeware tool to have extensions to support texture packing for animation files. With that said, the software has pretty much all options one would expect in an image editing service. Without extensions I did not notice anything in this that could be uniquely only done in GIMP on a high level.
  • Open Source and Free. Great image editing feature - Photo retouching. Good documentation / tutorials on website. Available across OS.
  • I've been using GIMP for over a decade, and I love how the app has grown. One of its biggest strengths is that it's open source. If someone has an idea for a useful or interesting graphic effect, someone else will make a plugin that does it. It's the best PhotoShop dupe out there and can do almost anything the very expensive program offers.
  • I find this software is so much like photoshop, I don’t miss a thing. Best of all, it is a free solution.
  • GIMP has a lot of features that are on Photoshop, but GIMP is free, contrary to Adobe's Photoshop. It also is open-source software, so you can customize it at your own will.

Cons

  • The user interface of this image editor versus the closest competitor, Paint.net is severely lacking. The ease of use and finding features is exceedingly difficult as well. I also have noticed the performance for this tool is substantially worse in my experience then other comparable image editors. GIMP also natively does not support DDS files which was a problem for my project.
  • Interface is not as refined as Photoshop so not as easy to use, especially if you have used PS already.
  • GIMP has a steep learning curve, and for some people it's too steep. But if you're willing to put in the time and watch a lot of YouTube video tutorials, you'll have a powerful program at your disposal. The biggest lack I've found is no good support for the YMCK colors needing for print applications.
  • The software can be buggy at times, but so can Photoshop.
  • I haven't found much problems while using GIMP, only that some things are hidden in the menus.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • *Very User-Friendly & easy to learn *You can import graphics files (PDF,AI etc.) of other software as well. *New version 1.0 also has CMYK support *Awesome community on Facebook.
  • Free to use & Open source. Available on Windows, Mac and Linux. Community support. Great documentation - tutorials, blogs, how-tos.

Cons

  • Crashes sometime (but always a create a backup file). Less support on 3D Graphics.
  • Steep learning curve. Slow performance and loading times especially on older hardware.
