About

EditPlus is a text editor for Windows with built-in FTP, FTPS and sftp capabilities. While it can serve as a good Notepad replacement, it also offers many powerful features for Web page authors and programmers.

About

Powerful and customizable text editor with support for a huge list of programming languages and developed as open source. Making multiple changes at once, swapping pieces of code, and a lot more is made trivial with TextMate’s easy way to add multiple insertion points. Select what you want to search, what you want to search for, and TextMate will present the results in a way that makes it easy to jump between matches, extract matched text, or preview desired replacements. See what files have changes in the file browser view, what lines have changes in the editor view, bring up a diff of the current file’s changes, commit a subset, TextMate supports it all for all the major version control systems. One file mixing languages? Projects using different build systems? Third party code with different formatting preferences? TextMate can handle it all by associating detailed scope selectors with key shortcuts, settings, etc.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Has all the modern features. East to record macro keystrokes. Fast loading has hex display. Better than Notepad++. Handles ftp built in. It's been my editor of choice for years.
  • My previous editor became unstable in recent releases, so I found myself searching for a new one. I seriously tried about 3 or 4 different editors for a few weeks each, but found EditPlus and stopped looking. For my particular needs editing Perl scripts, it's perfect. It easily supported running the Perl interpreter to syntax check the code and show the output in a separate pane. Color syntax highlighting and code folding are supported. It also has handled large files in the tens of megabytes quickly. It also allows for a fair amount of keyboard customization, so I was able to set up the key combinations I'm already familiar with for various operations. It also has the ability to insert code snippets which I have found useful on a few occasions. I don't use it to its fullest extent, but for what I need to do, it's intuitive, fast, and stable. I've yet to encounter an exception during operation and I use it for many hours per day, every day.

Cons

  • Hardly any. I like the features and nice menu design.
  • There have only been a couple of nits that are bothersome, and the author corrected them quickly upon being reported. The only one that I still encounter on a frequent basis is my need to have the File->Open dialog open to the same folder every time regardless of where I last opened a file from. Currently, it always defaults to the last folder you opened a file from, which means I often have to click through the folder hierarchy to get to my work folder.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • All good for code editing. Syntax highlighting for every language I ever tried, code folding, custom tabs/spaces. Updates are easy and it gets syntax packages automatically if you open/save a new file type. Hybrid view of markdown, special characters and formatting both shown.

Cons

  • It's not an IDE, you won't get much help beyond auto closing brackets and quotes.
