About

EditPlus is a text editor for Windows with built-in FTP, FTPS and sftp capabilities. While it can serve as a good Notepad replacement, it also offers many powerful features for Web page authors and programmers.

About

A true cross-platform, multi-language code editor, with support for over 60 languages on 9 platforms. Build or compile your project, then double-click on an error message in the Build window to jump to that location. Errors and warnings are marked with an icon in the left margin. In addition, the overview bar, positioned alongside the vertical scrollbar, marks the position of errors and warnings relative to the current scroll position in the document. To quickly scroll a marked location into view, you can drag the scrollbar slider to the mark, or click on the mark itself. SlickEdit's integrated debugging provides a convenient and easy to use front-end for many debuggers. Set breakpoints, step, inspect the stack, view variables/members - all the features you expect from a debugger. SlickEdit supports debugging for: GNU C/C++, Java, WinDbg, Clang C/C++ LLDB, Google Go, Python, Perl, Ruby, PHP, XCode, Scala, C# using Mono, Visual Basic using Mono, and Android JVM/NDK.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Has all the modern features. East to record macro keystrokes. Fast loading has hex display. Better than Notepad++. Handles ftp built in. It's been my editor of choice for years.
  • My previous editor became unstable in recent releases, so I found myself searching for a new one. I seriously tried about 3 or 4 different editors for a few weeks each, but found EditPlus and stopped looking. For my particular needs editing Perl scripts, it's perfect. It easily supported running the Perl interpreter to syntax check the code and show the output in a separate pane. Color syntax highlighting and code folding are supported. It also has handled large files in the tens of megabytes quickly. It also allows for a fair amount of keyboard customization, so I was able to set up the key combinations I'm already familiar with for various operations. It also has the ability to insert code snippets which I have found useful on a few occasions. I don't use it to its fullest extent, but for what I need to do, it's intuitive, fast, and stable. I've yet to encounter an exception during operation and I use it for many hours per day, every day.

Cons

  • Hardly any. I like the features and nice menu design.
  • There have only been a couple of nits that are bothersome, and the author corrected them quickly upon being reported. The only one that I still encounter on a frequent basis is my need to have the File->Open dialog open to the same folder every time regardless of where I last opened a file from. Currently, it always defaults to the last folder you opened a file from, which means I often have to click through the folder hierarchy to get to my work folder.
