About

Codeberg is a collaboration platform and git hosting for free and open source software, content and projects. Independent and powered by your donations and contributions - consider joining the non-profit association Codeberg e. V. to further support our mission and receive your vote! All services run on servers under our control, no dependencies on external services and no third party cookies, no tracking. While all successful software tools that enabled this development were contributed by the Free and Open Source Software community, commercial for-profit platforms dominate the hosting of the results of our collaborative work. This has led to the paradox that literally millions of volunteers create, collect, and maintain invaluable knowledge, documentation, and software, to feed closed platforms driven by commercial interests, whose program is neither visible nor controllable from outside.

About

Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. Git is easy to learn and has a tiny footprint with lightning fast performance. It outclasses SCM tools like Subversion, CVS, Perforce, and ClearCase with features like cheap local branching, convenient staging areas, and multiple workflows. You can query/set/replace/unset options with this command. The name is actually the section and the key separated by a dot, and the value will be escaped.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • * Powered by a non-profit, so no weird enterprise-license locked features, no weird misuses like GitHub copilot, etc. Just less potential for shady things going on. * Very simple and clean UI, especially compared to GitLab. * Nice community. * Free if your project is open-source, plenty opportunity to meet like-minded open-source developers.

Cons

  • * Limited to open-source, although this is also a positive point if you're looking for like-minded people. * Continuous Integration is just available as closed beta, no kubernetes or other advanced integrations, so it's a bit basic. * Less proven and financially backed than the big players, so I suppose bigger risk that one day it goes under. * Less great exploration and social features than GitHub, although they seem to be working on improving that (in Gitea, the software Codeberg uses).

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • - It has a two-step and commit and push feature, which makes the code pushing process easy and fast. - Pull request saves a lot of work time to see the new changes from the other teammates without having to clone the code again. - Switching between branches is easy and fast. - It makes the management of code base easy with single line commands.
  • - It helps in version controlling the code base of any project. - Multiple branches can be created, and it is quite easier to switch between the branch. - Pulling, pushing and merging is effortless to do. - It is not heavy on the system memory and tiny in file size.
  • 1. Git is the best and most used application by any developer because of its features and tools. 2. It helps in version controlling application with just few clicks. 3. The branch features helps tremendously when working with teams in a common project. 4. The pulling and pushing of code is easy and fast.
  • - It helps a lot in version controlling any project. - The pushing, merging and pulling all works great every time. - Cloning any application just takes seconds. - It is fast, robust and secure.
  • - Git helps in version control of the projects so that record of the projects can be saved for future use. - Git branch feature helps extremely for teams working on the same project. - It is extremely light and does not take up a lot of processing power of the system.

Cons

  • - It is not interactive and takes a lot of time to get used to it, especially for beginners.
  • - The commands can be a bit difficult to understand initially.
  • 1. There is no native graphical user interface for the application, so the user always have to use it by terminal or use third-party applications.
  • Honestly, there isn't any downside to this tool, everything works great.
  • - Git is a must-have tool and does not any con whatsoever.
