About

Clavio is hands-free dictation for Mac, built for people who write across different apps and need each context to behave differently. Speak with a held shortcut, a wake phrase, or Always On mode. Clavio places the resulting text at the cursor and can polish it using a writing style configured for the current app. Each app profile can have its own tone, listening mode, pause timing, translation target, and optional action after the text is pasted. This makes it possible to keep client email professional, chat more casual, and prompts for coding assistants direct. Dictionary entries help with names and specialist vocabulary, while snippets expand spoken triggers into reusable text. Clavio supports 28 dictation languages. It runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14.2 or later and is distributed as a signed, notarized Mac app. A free plan includes 3,000 polished words per month with no card required.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Wispr Flow is surprisingly useful from a developer’s point of view because it makes it way easier to get thoughts out quickly without breaking focus. I can talk through a prompt, describe a bug, draft a README section, write a commit message, or explain what I want an AI coding agent to do much faster than I can type it. The biggest win is that it understands developer language better than normal dictation. Project names, tools, APIs, frameworks, and weird technical terms are usually where voice typing falls apart, so the personal dictionary and developer-focused vocabulary make a real difference. I also like that it works across apps instead of being locked into one editor. Being able to use it in ChatGPT, Claude, Slack, docs, email, and coding tools makes it feel like a system-wide productivity layer, not just a standalone transcription app. The AI cleanup is great too. It removes filler words, handles corrections while I’m speaking, formats text, and turns rambling thoughts into something cleaner. For developers using AI agents, that is huge because better prompts usually mean better output.

Cons

  • Wispr Flow is not perfect if you work in a noisy space or feel awkward talking to your computer. Voice-first workflows are powerful, but they are not always ideal in an office, around family, or in shared environments. It also will not replace careful typing for everything. For actual code, I would still want to review syntax, formatting, and exact symbols closely. Voice is amazing for prompts, comments, docs, tickets, and planning, but precise code editing still needs a developer’s eye. The price may also be a consideration. There are cheaper or open-source dictation options, so the value really depends on whether Wispr’s polish, app coverage, vocabulary learning, and AI cleanup save you enough time.
