About

Orbital Stack is an AI and CFD web-based software that provides earlier qualitative guidance, comparing a large number of design options while highlighting any potential wind and thermal comfort red flags. It allows for the realization of a variety of climate-conscious, high-performance developments not previously feasible due to cost and/or time constraints associated with traditional studies. Orbital Stack is the first digital climate-analysis tool built by global leaders in wind and microclimate engineering using real wind tunnel data. It is truly a game-changer for the architecture and building design sector, offering our clients direct access to wind comfort and safety analysis, thermal comfort and shadowing analysis, and cladding pressure simulations. This means architects can run their own wind simulations and quickly understand the climate impacts of their proposed building designs from the start, making decisions that result in higher performing and more resilient projects.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Comsol allows for creating physics simulations in a large variety of fields (from acoustics, to electromagnetics, to thermal applications, to fluid dynamics, to semiconductor physics, to.... you name them). The overall capabilities of Comsol Mutiphysics are pretty much endless as soon as you have to solve differential equations. Its GUI is really nice and is more intuitive than some other alternatives such as Abaqus.

Cons

  • At first it can be very intimidating and overwhelming. Deciding what "physics" you want to solve, setting up your first simulation, customizing your equations, calculating specific physical quantities, testing for convergence, ... This is true for most of the specialized software, but because of the multiphysics component, it can be daunting to get started with this particular software suite. To me, the most negative aspect is the customer support. I've been conducting research in my field for over 15 years and I've used multitude of software, from open source to commercial packages, and Comsol has the worst technical support of them all. Several years ago, I interviewed for a senior application engineer position at Comsol, and I was told by the senior managing engineer who was interviewing me two things that made me reject the offer they made: 1) that the company "does not care about academia because academic license are cheap and do not bring in money" (as opposed to industry) and 2) "Engineers at Comsol are not suppose to help people with their particular technical problems, they are here to refer the customer to online resource that already exist".

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • The user interface and visualizations of the results are pretty neat. The technical support team is quite responsive, and I find that my queries have always been resolved at the earliest.
  • Fast and easy to integrate to project with a wide range of options. Computational fluid dynamics is a hard problem to solve and they are solving this at scale!
  • Speed of simulation is good and allows for multiple iterations in a short amount of time. The user interface is web based, very intuitive and does not involve any specialized training allowing all the staff the ability to use the platform as needed. The output graphics are very interesting and help convey the problem areas quickly . The graphics can be adjusted for specific time period as needed. The tech support is good and response is within an hour if you encounter any problems.
  • Excellent tool; clear step by step process. Nice division between sets analysis. Nice interface, easy to step between options. Multiple ways to graphically show your analysis.

Cons

  • As the software is on the preliminary stages of operations, there are a few limitations if compared to similar programs available in the market. But, I am sure, they are constantly upgrading the engine for better user control and experience.
  • No download of data which makes it a bit hard to integrate to other tools.
  • There is need for more refined analysis which would be helpful in all phases of the project. Currently the AI part of the software is helpful in early stage wind analysis, when big massing moves are being made. However the results are less helpful in later phases of the project when you are making small changes e.g. increasing screen wall height from 4' to 6' etc. The software needs to allow for download of predicted windspeed and comfort data in spread sheet format. Currently this is not possible. The base AI package does not generate the wind flow lines. it would be helpful to get this data in the base package. Currently the wind flow lines are part of the higher tiered Rapid CFD package.
  • UX needs a bit of work at downloading the graphics content.
