About

Azure Data Studio is a cross-platform database tool for data professionals who use on-premises and cloud data platforms on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Azure Data Studio offers a modern editor experience with IntelliSense, code snippets, source control integration, and an integrated terminal. It's engineered with the data platform user in mind, with the built-in charting of query result sets and customizable dashboards. Use Azure Data Studio to query, design, and manage your databases and data warehouses wherever they are, on your local computer or in the cloud. We recommend the user installer, which simplifies installations and updates and doesn't require Administrator privileges.

About

PostgreSQL GUI tool for macOS. PSequel provides a clean and simple interface for you to perform common PostgreSQL tasks quickly. pgAdmin is great for its feature-richness. However, its UI is clumsy and complicated. There is a list of PostgreSQL GUI Tools. However, they are either web-based, Java-based or don't support the features some want. In the good old MySQL world, the best client is Sequel Pro, but its support for PostgreSQL doesn't seem to be happening. So, we decided to make one. PSequel is written from scratch in Swift 2, although PSequel's UI is highly inspired by Sequel Pro. PSequel is being developed in our spare time. By supporting macOS 10.10+ only, the codebase can be kept simpler and save time by not testing it in older versions of macOS. And, less code, less bugs. PSequel is still in its early stage.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Auto Save - Reliable in launching all of the ADS Windows/Instances and Sessions/Query Tabs when ADS crashes or closes unexpectedly (although, ADS is very stable and I have not had any issues with crashes or unexpected close) CONNECTIONS (side panel) - Lists all Connections and easily accessible with a single Mouse Click NOTEBOOKS (side panel) - Run and Retain Queries and Results in an easy-to-read Notebook perfect for change comparisons DATABASE PROJECTS (side panel) - Create new or manage existing Projects EXPLORER (side panel) - View and Manage OPEN EDITORS, OPEN FOLDERS, OUTLINE, TIMELINE regardless if these objects are Saved or Unsaved SEARCH (side panel) - Easily Search and Replace text in Databases, Tables, Queries, Results, JavaScript, Powershell, Commands, etc... SOURCE CONTROL (side panel) - Track code changes EXTENSIONS (side panel) - Easily Install and Manage Extensions for a fully integrated experience (however, with all of the built in features, Extensions are not really needed) Additional Pros: Fully integrated with other applications. Opens and Saves SSMS Files (.sql, .ssmssln, and .ssmssqlproj) in their native format. Retains Recovery Files in this location \\AppData\Roaming\azuredatastudio\Backups Easy to Navigate UI Open Source - Free to use and installed alongside Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (this makes it accessible for organization software restrictions) VS Code requires licenses and is not accessible within organizations that have software restrictions

Cons

  • I don't like that it's being retired in February 2026. I highly recommend searching for forums that are requesting Microsoft to keep ADS if you use it and are worried about losing all of your work.
