About

Azure Data Studio is a cross-platform database tool for data professionals who use on-premises and cloud data platforms on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Azure Data Studio offers a modern editor experience with IntelliSense, code snippets, source control integration, and an integrated terminal. It's engineered with the data platform user in mind, with the built-in charting of query result sets and customizable dashboards. Use Azure Data Studio to query, design, and manage your databases and data warehouses wherever they are, on your local computer or in the cloud. We recommend the user installer, which simplifies installations and updates and doesn't require Administrator privileges.

About

Objectivity/DB is a massively scalable, high performance, distributed Object Database (ODBMS). It is extremely good at handling complex data, where there are many types of connections between objects and many variants. Objectivity/DB can also serve as a massively scalable, high performance graph database. Its DO query language supports standard data retrieval queries as well as high-performance path-based navigational queries. Objectivity/DB is a distributed database, presenting a Single Logical View of its managed data. Data can be hosted on a single machine or distributed across up to 65,000 machines. Connected items can span machines. Objectivity/DB runs on 32 or 64-bit processors running Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. APIs include: C++, C#, Java and Python. All platform and language combinations are interoperable. For example, objects stored by a program using C++ on Linux can be read by a C# program on Windows and a Java program on Mac OS X.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Auto Save - Reliable in launching all of the ADS Windows/Instances and Sessions/Query Tabs when ADS crashes or closes unexpectedly (although, ADS is very stable and I have not had any issues with crashes or unexpected close) CONNECTIONS (side panel) - Lists all Connections and easily accessible with a single Mouse Click NOTEBOOKS (side panel) - Run and Retain Queries and Results in an easy-to-read Notebook perfect for change comparisons DATABASE PROJECTS (side panel) - Create new or manage existing Projects EXPLORER (side panel) - View and Manage OPEN EDITORS, OPEN FOLDERS, OUTLINE, TIMELINE regardless if these objects are Saved or Unsaved SEARCH (side panel) - Easily Search and Replace text in Databases, Tables, Queries, Results, JavaScript, Powershell, Commands, etc... SOURCE CONTROL (side panel) - Track code changes EXTENSIONS (side panel) - Easily Install and Manage Extensions for a fully integrated experience (however, with all of the built in features, Extensions are not really needed) Additional Pros: Fully integrated with other applications. Opens and Saves SSMS Files (.sql, .ssmssln, and .ssmssqlproj) in their native format. Retains Recovery Files in this location \\AppData\Roaming\azuredatastudio\Backups Easy to Navigate UI Open Source - Free to use and installed alongside Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (this makes it accessible for organization software restrictions) VS Code requires licenses and is not accessible within organizations that have software restrictions

Cons

  • I don't like that it's being retired in February 2026. I highly recommend searching for forums that are requesting Microsoft to keep ADS if you use it and are worried about losing all of your work.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • As opposed to Objectivity's competitors, its product "InfiniteGraph" quickly becomes extraordinary for development. Specifically, its graphical objects can be specified by the designer, thus permitting advanced designs such as for hypergraph support. This, in combination with its graph language, yields a beautiful and powerful base for advanced distributed knowledge systems.

Cons

  • Although it is now substantially and rapidly improving, more training resources will help develop deeper product skills over a broader range of users.
