About

AutoIt v3 is a freeware BASIC-like scripting language designed for automating the Windows GUI and general scripting. It uses a combination of simulated keystrokes, mouse movement, and window/control manipulation in order to automate tasks in a way not possible or reliable with other languages. We looked at many editors to see which one was the most useful editor for AutoIt. We found SciTE and saw its potential and wrote a customized Lexer for the syntax highlighting and syntax folding and created a special installer called SciTE4AutoIt3. AutoIt was initially designed for PC "roll out" situations to reliably automate and configure thousands of PCs. Over time it has become a powerful language that supports complex expressions, user functions, loops and everything else that veteran scripters would expect.AutoIt is also very small, self-contained and will run on all versions of Windows out-of-the-box with no annoying "runtimes" required.

About

The Open Container Initiative is an open governance structure for the express purpose of creating open industry standards around container formats and runtimes. Established in June 2015 by Docker and other leaders in the container industry, the OCI currently contains two specifications, the runtime specification (runtime-spec) and the image specification (image-spec). The runtime specification outlines how to run a “filesystem bundle” that is unpacked on disk. At a high-level an OCI implementation would download an OCI Image then unpack that image into an OCI Runtime filesystem bundle. At this point the OCI Runtime Bundle would be run by an OCI Runtime. The Open Container Initiative (OCI) is a lightweight, open governance structure (project), formed under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, for the express purpose of creating open industry standards around container formats and runtime. The OCI was launched on June 22nd 2015 by Docker, CoreOS and other leaders.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Flexible language, wide support for Windows functions
  • Used AutoIt nearly every day for 5 years or more, at a large multinational, and have written dozens of applications, including data scrapers, report parsers, barcode readers, and mission critical tools to monitor critical hardware and alert support staff if that hardware goes offline. It has a pretty flat learning curve. It creates standalone executables, and (for the most part) doesn’t require any .dll files to be deployed. There’s downloadable help and a custom version of the SciTE code editor. You can also use Visual Studio Code, as there’s an AutoIt plugin available for that.
  • The product itself is good, the community is not. Iv'e used this product for years, however i've refrained from too much activity in the forums due to the below.

Cons

  • Although the code is easily decompilable to the original source format, it needs some sort of obfuscator like the one made by PELock—AutoIt Obfuscator—to prevent source code theft from the competition. Support forums is terrible, they hide any post claiming how easy is to decompile AutoIt executable back to the source code...
  • AutoIt is Windows only. If you’re a Linux shop, look elsewhere.
  • The mod team and devs are horrible. They don't even understand the word automation and that is the entire reason for this application.
