About

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while automating time-consuming administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you to focus on your applications so you can give them the fast performance, high availability, security and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on several database instance types - optimized for memory, performance or I/O - and provides you with six familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database, and SQL Server. You can use the AWS Database Migration Service to easily migrate or replicate your existing databases to Amazon RDS.

About

Quest Database Management Solutions. Today’s database technology is becoming increasingly complex, and supports previously unthinkable data volumes – all driven by the demands of today’s always-on economy. This drives most organizations to spend up to 65% of their time just keeping the lights on, leaving very little time to deliver innovations that move the business forward. Digital transformation initiatives such as cloud migration, DevOps, open-source database adoption and data privacy require commitment and time from IT at a time when they are already under huge pressure to maintain service levels. It’s time for a new approach. Spend less time managing your data environment, and more time building a data-driven business. As the top-ranked ISV for database management software tools in the world, we help you simplify this complex technology in order to manage, monitor and move your data across a wide variety of on-premises and cloud-based systems.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Reliable database. Highly available. Supports a variety of db - My, Postgre, Maria, Oracle, Ms. Works great with Amazon Aurora. Great security policies. Available as a part of free tier (750 hours per month usage).
  • Amazon RDS is a relational database service. It is a part of AWS Stack and integrates well with other services. It is a reliable and powerful service with a lot of configuration options for advanced users. It is a part of free tier which allows limited free usage for first year.
  • Easy to set up with minimal configuration. Managed service. Multi zone presence leads to high availability. Scalable based on demand. Automated patching and backups. CloudWatch integration - Better monitoring.

Cons

  • Initial setup and data migration is complex - the process should be streamlined for new users. Expensive.
  • It is easy to use once setup But the setup itself is a bit complicated and not beginner friendly. Also pricing scales pretty quickly for db intensive operations like frequent updation.
  • Limited for advanced users as no direct access to underlying server.
