About

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while automating time-consuming administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you to focus on your applications so you can give them the fast performance, high availability, security and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on several database instance types - optimized for memory, performance or I/O - and provides you with six familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database, and SQL Server. You can use the AWS Database Migration Service to easily migrate or replicate your existing databases to Amazon RDS.

About

Navicat Premium is a database development tool that allows you to simultaneously connect to MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQLite databases from a single application. Compatible with cloud databases like Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, Amazon Redshift, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, Google Cloud and MongoDB Atlas. You can quickly and easily build, manage and maintain your databases. Data Transfer, Data Synchronization and Structure Synchronization help you migrate your data easier and faster for less overhead. Deliver detailed, step-by-step guidelines for transferring data across various DBMS. Compare and synchronize databases with Data and Structure Synchronization. Set up and deploy the comparisons in seconds, and get the detailed script to specify the changes you want to execute.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Reliable database. Highly available. Supports a variety of db - My, Postgre, Maria, Oracle, Ms. Works great with Amazon Aurora. Great security policies. Available as a part of free tier (750 hours per month usage).
  • Amazon RDS is a relational database service. It is a part of AWS Stack and integrates well with other services. It is a reliable and powerful service with a lot of configuration options for advanced users. It is a part of free tier which allows limited free usage for first year.
  • Easy to set up with minimal configuration. Managed service. Multi zone presence leads to high availability. Scalable based on demand. Automated patching and backups. CloudWatch integration - Better monitoring.

Cons

  • Initial setup and data migration is complex - the process should be streamlined for new users. Expensive.
  • It is easy to use once setup But the setup itself is a bit complicated and not beginner friendly. Also pricing scales pretty quickly for db intensive operations like frequent updation.
  • Limited for advanced users as no direct access to underlying server.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Being an IT consultant and author requires me to work with a variety of databases. These include popular DBMS such as MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, as well as cloud providers such as Amazon RDS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. One of the most challenging tasks is migrating structure and data between two heterogeneous database types. Before I discovered Navicat Premium, I used to have to dump SQL files using a 3rd party utility and then create database objects on the target DB. Now I can connect to both simultaneously and perform all of my migration work from one tool. The latest version - 15 - added a couple of features that I have gotten a lot of use from. The first is Dark Mode. My eyes get really tired after a few hours of bright computer screens. Dark mode is so much easier on them. I also have greatly benefited from the new data visualization tool. It's enables me to transform my organization's data into sharp-looking visualizations to better identify trends and patterns. I've presented data analysis to my team mates and superiors to support my business decisions and strategies with outstanding results!

Cons

  • If there's any fault with Navicat Premium it's that it has maybe too many features. There are some things that I rarely or never use. For example, the product designers put a lot of work into the Visual SQL Builder. While it may be beneficial to beginners who are not well versed in SQL, I don't personally need it.
