About

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while automating time-consuming administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you to focus on your applications so you can give them the fast performance, high availability, security and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on several database instance types - optimized for memory, performance or I/O - and provides you with six familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database, and SQL Server. You can use the AWS Database Migration Service to easily migrate or replicate your existing databases to Amazon RDS.

About

GaussDB (for MySQL) is a next generation MySQL-compatible, enterprise-class distributed database service. It uses a decoupled compute and storage architecture and data functions virtualization (DFV) storage that auto-scales up to 128 TB per DB instance. There is virtually no risk of data loss. It supports millions of QPS throughputs and cross-AZ deployment, combining the performance and reliability of commercial databases with the flexibility of open source databases. By decoupling compute and storage, connecting them through RDMA, and using a "log as database" architecture, you can get seven times the performance of open-source databases. To scale read capacity and performance, you can add up to 15 read replicas for a primary node within minutes. GaussDB(for MySQL) is fully compatible with MySQL. You can easily migrate your MySQL databases to GaussDB(for MySQL) without reconstructing existing applications and without sharding.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Reliable database. Highly available. Supports a variety of db - My, Postgre, Maria, Oracle, Ms. Works great with Amazon Aurora. Great security policies. Available as a part of free tier (750 hours per month usage).
  • Amazon RDS is a relational database service. It is a part of AWS Stack and integrates well with other services. It is a reliable and powerful service with a lot of configuration options for advanced users. It is a part of free tier which allows limited free usage for first year.
  • Easy to set up with minimal configuration. Managed service. Multi zone presence leads to high availability. Scalable based on demand. Automated patching and backups. CloudWatch integration - Better monitoring.

Cons

  • Initial setup and data migration is complex - the process should be streamlined for new users. Expensive.
  • It is easy to use once setup But the setup itself is a bit complicated and not beginner friendly. Also pricing scales pretty quickly for db intensive operations like frequent updation.
  • Limited for advanced users as no direct access to underlying server.
