About

Alfacast is a cross-platform screen mirroring and real-time streaming application for sharing video content between computers, mobile devices, TVs, and other supported devices. The software supports macOS, iOS, tvOS, Fire OS, Android, Android TV, Wear OS, Linux, and Windows. The multichannel streamer feature allows you to broadcast content from desktop PC or Mac to 32 devices simultaneously in real-time. Similarly, the maximum number of channels for mobile or wearable devices is 8. The app automatically discovers compatible devices on the local network without requiring users to scan QR codes, enter IP addresses, or manually add users. Alfacast uses peer-to-peer and peer-to-many streaming, supports codecs including H.264, H.265, VP8, VP9 and can stream video at resolutions up to 4K at 60 frames per second. Alfacast is designed for users who need flexible, software-based screen sharing and multidevice streaming without deploying a dedicated streaming server.

About

Free software to take back control of your videos. PeerTube, developed by Framasoft, is the free and decentralized alternative to video platforms, providing you over 400,000 videos published by 60,000 users and viewed over 15 million times PeerTube aspires to be a decentralized and free/libre alternative to video broadcasting services. Our aim is not to replace them, but rather to simultaneously offer something else, with different values. PeerTube is not meant to become a huge platform that would centralize videos from all around the world. Rather, it is a network of inter-connected small videos hosters. Anyone with a modicum of technical skills can host a PeerTube server, aka an instance. Each instance hosts its users and their videos. In this way, every instance is created, moderated and maintained independently by various administrators.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • PeerTube v4 and higher is awesome. Great p2p tech. It even comes with an easy to use docker container. Any server admin with basic skills can install and configure PeerTube. Remote storage and (soon) remote transcoding will be supported as well. You can't get much more decentralised than that. Just fyi, there's also a free plugin for PeerTube server now called "Hive-Tube". Any video or podcast etc that you upload, or import from Youtube (and other sites) can be auto-monetized, providing you (and even your viewers/listeners if desired) with passive income.
  • Free & Open Source. Easy to use. Decentralized & federated. P2P streaming to reduce network load by sharing bandwidth between users. Community driven development.

Cons

  • Cons? I honestly can't think of any. Remote transcoding will be nice too, but that isn't really needed anyway unless you run a huge site like youtube or something.
  • Hosting instance needs lots of script installation - not easy for most users.
