About

Fully managed and hosted PostgreSQL with high performance and all the extensions you want out of the box. Set up fully managed PostgreSQL in less than 10 minutes — directly from our web console or programmatically via our API, CLI, Terraform provider or Kubernetes operator. Our stand-by nodes act automatically as read replicas, and you can also create additional read replicas in different public clouds and regions, even building multi-cloud architectures. Our Point-In-Time-Recovery lets you restore your data to any time within your selected retention period. A fully managed SQL relational database, deployable in the cloud of your choice. Known for reliability, a robust set of features, and exceptionally high performance. Fits well for almost any case, such as creating location-based services, mission critical business applications or simply as a general transactional database.

About

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while automating time-consuming administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. It frees you to focus on your applications so you can give them the fast performance, high availability, security and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on several database instance types - optimized for memory, performance or I/O - and provides you with six familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database, and SQL Server. You can use the AWS Database Migration Service to easily migrate or replicate your existing databases to Amazon RDS.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Reliable database. Highly available. Supports a variety of db - My, Postgre, Maria, Oracle, Ms. Works great with Amazon Aurora. Great security policies. Available as a part of free tier (750 hours per month usage).
  • Amazon RDS is a relational database service. It is a part of AWS Stack and integrates well with other services. It is a reliable and powerful service with a lot of configuration options for advanced users. It is a part of free tier which allows limited free usage for first year.
  • Easy to set up with minimal configuration. Managed service. Multi zone presence leads to high availability. Scalable based on demand. Automated patching and backups. CloudWatch integration - Better monitoring.

Cons

  • Initial setup and data migration is complex - the process should be streamlined for new users. Expensive.
  • It is easy to use once setup But the setup itself is a bit complicated and not beginner friendly. Also pricing scales pretty quickly for db intensive operations like frequent updation.
  • Limited for advanced users as no direct access to underlying server.
