About

Release planning or PI planning is common place practice for scaled scrum teams. Typically this planning is done for a duration (quarter) or for specific number of sprints (5 sprints). Available work in the product backlog is distributed within teams and tagged to specific sprints. Work is priorities according to target release (fix version). Typically before this release planning the available work is already prioritized in the product backlog. The premise of this article is to discuss how to track the success of release planning after the actual planning meeting. What are the appropriate metrics and reports to be used to justify plan versus actual and the ROI for management for investing in release planning meetings. (Release planning meeting could be huge investment, e.g. 100 members team in planning meeting for two days is 1600 hours; plan logistics etc.).

About

TestCollab is an AI-powered test management software that helps QA, development, and product teams manage testing from requirements to release. Teams can store and organise test cases, test executions, test plans, requirements, milestones, reusable suites, and test data in one central workspace. QA Copilot helps automate test case creation from Jira stories, requirements, screenshots, PDFs, URLs, and code context, and also supports test case automation by turning scenarios into automation-ready steps. TestCollab integrates with Jira, GitLab, GitHub, Azure DevOps, and other tools for defects, requirements, CI/CD, and automation reporting. Teams can assign work, comment on test executions, track sprint quality, visualise trends, find weak areas, estimate testing effort before releases, and prioritise issues early. With custom fields, roles, templates, dashboards, reports, SSO, 2FA, audit logs, and SOC 2 Type II compliance, TestCollab helps teams release with confidence.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • TestCollab is very easy to set up and use, even for someone new to test management. The UI is clean and intuitive, so my team did not need much training. I really liked how test cases can be organized into suites and reused across multiple projects, which saves a lot of time. Integrations with Jira and GitHub work smoothly, and reporting gives a clear picture of test coverage and execution progress. Collaboration features like assigning test runs and commenting within test cases made team communication much better.
  • Responsive Support: Users benefit from prompt and helpful assistance, ensuring their queries and issues are addressed quickly. Effective Issue Resolution: The platform actively addresses raised concerns, demonstrating a commitment to improving functionality and user experience. Intuitive Navigation: Easy-to-use interface facilitates smooth and efficient navigation, enhancing user productivity. Organized Test Case Management: Suite separation for test cases improves organization and clarity, streamlining testing processes and enhancing overall efficiency.

Cons

  • Lack support for BDD and custom reports on dashboard.
  • If a test plan was created without a test case and then exited, only the project administrator can delete it. You can also check two test plans and then delete one; from API, those empty test plans aren’t deleted from the UI. Unfortunately, the platform has several issues with sorting or filtering. Additionally, sometimes, the test plans get stuck and cannot be accessed. One of the most exasperating aspects is the absence of a recycle bin. Once something is deleted, it’s gone for good unless you’re willing to pay a hefty fee for administrator assistance. This lack of user-friendliness can be a significant drawback for many.
