If you are looking for an alternative, use Cjax ( githib.com/ajaxboy/cjax ) it is well maintained and easier to use.

I think the software is very easy to use, Javascript-Knowlegde required is only minimal. Easy to use with Smarty. With a good example you need half an hour to have for example filled your second select form depending on the first select. With a consistent documentation this project could be quite popular.
